Went on a cruise in the city last night with some of the Chicago Taildraggers. We joined up with a group "Streets Calling" probably 300+ riders all on road bikes or street MTBs. Some from Walmart but also some nice high-end stuff. Pretty sure mine was the only vintage ride, a 40's Elgin. The rest of the Taildraggers were on custom stretches and the like so we stuck out in a good way as a custom bike club. Great way to spend my birthday. Pretty sure I was the oldest guy there too. Hehe but not the slowest...

Stunning Autumn day in Melbourne for a ride along the Yarra River trail on the Red Menace. I recently fitted a pair of S&M Speedball tires and I must say they are incredible. 110psi rated! I pumped them to 85psi and they still ride great but the bike rolls so much faster. There's also little flex when you're standing on it.

The first 3 photos are of the Melbourne Docklands precinct. A bit over 20 years ago when I moved nearby, none of this existed. The area housed disused customs sheds (like the one in the third photo) and paved bluestone rides. I wish it was still like that, but some would call it progress.

In the last photo you can see the heritage listed vinegar girl sign in the background.

I've heard the best way to prepare carp is to broil it on an oak board, then throw away the carp and eat the board.

After days of rain, yesterday was perfect weather for a bike ride: mostly sunny, chilly enough for my riding pants and a light jacket all morning, and mildly breezy. I drove down to New River Gorge National Park in southern WV, and rode Southside Trail from the trailhead to the "town" of Thurmond and back, 13 miles in all. It took 3 hours of very casual pedaling, with plenty of time to stop and take photos and enjoy a snack break. I've included a couple of images of Thurmond's remnants from the days when it was a coal boom town.

Apology if I’ve posted this before. Just rode it to pick up my car.

Bought new in 1989. Raced til 1993. This it’s it’s third iteration. Shimano Tourney 3x7 speed brifters work great. I think the frame (Columbus tubing), crank, seat post, headset and pedals are all that’s original. Matti would approve of the splatter paint.

We had a pretty diverse collection at last night's Retro-Ride:

We set out to visit a nearby park where there are some new art installations from a local chainsaw artist. We were not disappointed.

It is my firm belief that all good rides end with pizza or ice cream. (And the best rides end with pizza AND ice cream.)

They are comfortable and let me have more of an upright posture. They are a good fit for my usual casual, non-aggressive approach to riding.

Urban wastelands and the Nameless One again

I've got a love/hate thing with the ATVs. On one hand, the trail network criss crossing my town is because of them. On the other hand

And some use them to haul trailer loads of garbage to dump in the woods. What is wrong with people?

Crossroads and I have gotten a bit of rail trail exercise this week. 22 miles on Tuesday and 30 miles this morning. I'm trying to figure out why I don't want to work on cutting the grass tomorrow.
