What's the difference between 7/8" and 7/8"?

An old school Wald stem will fit in the seat tube on my old Huffys, but if I take the end of the seat post that's supposed to fit a 7/8" seat clamp it doesn't fit. 7/8" handlebars don't go in either.13/16" seat post just fall right in.

Measuring the end of the post that fits in the bike frame, it looks to be 27/32" and the end that the seat attaches to is just a "fuzz" under 7/8" according to my old Stanley Powerlock tape.

I am waiting for a 7/8" layback seat post I ordered and now I am wondering which 7/8" it will be.

There are a few oddballs out there with 'not-quite' sizing. I'd try a 13/16" seat post with a 13/16" to 7/8" split shim.

Here they are. 2 old Huffys. A late '70's/early '80's Good Vibrations and a '64 Huffy built Monark Thunderbird. Both have the same odd sized seat post

there are actually 2 sizes of stems like that. One is 22.2 mm and the other is 21.1 mm. similar but not identical...

The seat post on this 1964 Huffy measures 21.5 mm or 27/32 inch with a vernier caliper. RustyGold is probably right about using 13/16 post with a shim.

I ran a 13/16" long Schwinn post w/ a shim for a couple of years in my Good Vibrations until I came across a long huffy post on a trashed early mtb style Huffy. Took some effort to get the "right" one in after squashing the clamp on the adapted one.

Found a solution for a lay back seat post. I've seen this done somewhere before, but never able to try it until now. The stem is marked 22.2, but it dropped right in like a 21.1.
