I did a double take when I read “rear steering”. This would probably be “dual steering”. On an aircraft or a watercraft it would be called dual controls.

Riding a tandem is a great relationship test, akin to assembling Ikea furniture.
That would be a very basic test indeed.

I love my wife, but she is a simple soul who will never extend her knowledge much past things like TV, gardening, and her pets.

I wish there was a video of my wife and I installing a television antenna on the chimney. She is a schoolteacher but she has no idea about physics and simple machinery like levers and wedges.
When I tell her to “step on that board and grab this”, it’s not obvious to her why. Not at all, and I have to explain to her Everything upfront before she will act.

This is a real pain in emergency situations, like when I’m holding something with all my might, and yelling for her to step on that board, and she’s standing there asking me why.

We have had a few tandems. All had 20" wheels.
One was a "BikeFriday". Assembled from used parts and some I made while working there.
That was a nice ride, but as so often happens, a friend talked me into selling it to him.

There is a "drill", as Cathie calls it, where the "captian" calls out what is about to happen.
Like, pause, to shift the 3-speed, coast, turning left, push harder for a bit, ready? OK start, and so on.

The first thing I noticed when testing out updown, is that her head is very close and talking
or calling out is easy, no "shouting to the wind' or twisting around.
You have exactly the same situation on a motorcycle, and there is lots of wind noise, plus helmets.

Eventually I got an electric intercom that connects the helmets. There are times when it is critical that your passenger pays attention to what’s going on as opposed to sightseeing.

Many years ago I was riding around on a chopper and I had a fellow motorcyclist on the back. I was going around a long uphill curve, and doing all I could to lay the bike over, going slower and slower around this corner because the guy behind was sitting up instead of leaning over with the bike!

He had no understanding of the physics of that motorcycle with two people on it. He literally thought we were falling over, but all I was doing was tossing it down in the curve. This was a guy that had his own 500 Honda motorcycle.

So yeah, there’s Gotta be a captain, and the captain must know the physics.

I just had this vision of my wife and I on a tandem bicycle coming up to a bottomless pothole, and I tell her to stop, and instead of stopping she asks “why?”

Perhaps she should just have her own bicycle.

Had plans to include "dual" steering, but she didn't want it.
That sure made the construction simple.
This is more like a 'cargo" bike, with the space up for a passenger.
Still, there needs to be something to hold on to.

Knowing the physics is needed, not everyone understands those.
Also important is communication. Some warning about the next move.
Having the "passenger" trust the "captian" helps too, also not always the case.
Puts pressure on the "captian", as he or she is riding for two, and mistakes are
not forgoten quickly.
To me, the end result is worth any extra concern or trouble.

The same sort of thing as 'two in a canoe".
She only dumped me twice, but the one time I dumped her, her phone got wet.
That was the end of that.
The "next" boat was wider and needed a motor.

If you are eager for a more advanced test, get her to guide you as you back up a trailer into the driveway
Tried it. Didn't work.
Same thing with hooking up to a trailer. She says she doesn't know how.
Also refuses to "learn" how.

Much quicker to take the ten tries to line up the ball, and go ahead and back up into things.
Just go slow so as to cause less damage.

Cathie has no depth perception , one eye damaged from birth, has not driven with trailers.
i spent years driving trucks, backing big things into small holes and around corners.

She has no way of knowing . I know but still am careful.

I generally only hit things when backing.

Forward Go.

Weirdly, it's the exact opposite for us. She drives for this process, and we hook up first try every time.
I have a camera. Also I was a teamster. Their motto should be Trailers-R-Us.

I have hooked up up 1000 trailers.

My wife, OTOH, has never even driven the truck. She wouldn’t drive the last one either, and they’re both automatic Toyotas. The most she ever had to do is hold the rope as I backed the boat into the lake.

Just caught up with this build's pics. WOW. I love how off the wall this is, but how cool it looks and the "guess engineering". Bravo man!
Keep plugging away and cross the finish line with this cool freakbike!

Thanks for your time to check out this build, and all your "likes".

As it turns out the result is very heavy, and slow. Just like I thought it would be.
But it is stable enough to ride, and that I did not know untill now, after a tandem test ride,
and of course the build needed to be built to test it.

I'd better get busy with the finish.

Sorry about blowing up your notifications with about 20+ likes and I stepped through your thread. :D

Well, kingfish, it's ok if your sorry, but I'm not.
I recieve that as a high complement. Thanks again for taking the time to look.

On to today's dilema.
upDown 2 is just about two heavy to keep on lifting up onto the rollie cart.

So I made a way.

Take your pick of explaitives;

Flying updowns
trikes in space
up the creek
just hangin' around
don't look like deer meat to me
SoOre Flyer
it's about time, what took ya so long

It’s you and the Mrs. who are going to be pushing hard, to get this thing off the ground!

Anyhow it looks like you’ve got a serious amount of decontamination to do.

That's it,
Decontamination.

When I start welding a bunch of junk together, that's what I end up with.
Contamination.
Bicycle contamination.

But if the end result is ride able, that might help.

One thing for sure, you won't find anything like UpDown 2 at wallmart.
