I’ll try harder not to upset you in the future
K start by not assuming that a bike that's not your definition of "nice" could only get votes in an ironic fashion, akin to boats named by the internet. If you look at your statement, it is actually quite insulting, especially to the guy who built the "maggot" you are disparaging.

I had no idea how much people liked total maggot bikes here, & when I look at the nice bikes that were absolutely humiliated in the voting, I can only think “Boaty McBoatface”.
It’s ok, don’t let it get you down. My maggot bike was extreme on the maggot scale. It was mostly a joke. I wasn’t going to join this build off as the weather doesn’t cooperate for painting or making anything nice. At the last minute I just tossed together a bunch of old junk that was going to the scrap drive for the volunteer fire department. I wish I hadn’t tossed out a bunch of junk last summer. I could have used the tires and rims for this project. It will be my bar bike.

I hope you understand that there’s nothing personal about this. You can build/ride anything you want.

You’re welcome to have your joke, as long as I can have my opinion. The beauty of all art is always in the eye of the beholder.

Your opinion is greatly appreciated and furthermore I agree with it. I guess a few people like saving bike parts to recycle and use in this fashion.

I understand making something from leftovers and junk, as an art form, which is why I suggested a two way build off next time.

We have one category for maggot bikes and one category for slick bikes.

But I’m not sure that it would matter as much as I think. The voting rules are a radical factor. Also I may not have a bike in the competition if I’m busy working on something else.

I’ve never thought about your idea. I think it’s a good one. Let’s see who can build the krp est bike that you can still ride. It would take a lot of thought to beat the one I built. I’m not saying it’s impossible, there are a lot of bad ideas I have not come up with. Excellent idea with a lot of potential. But, are their enough people that want to waste their time doing this to have competition?

Feel like challenging someone to a mini build off?

This is the place for you then!

1. Find another forum member(s) to challenge to a mini build off
2. Agree on a theme, style, rules, deadlines, etc
3. Start a single thread in which you document your builds
4. Create a poll when complete for members to vote

These mini build offs are not organized by the forum admins and are totally in the hands of the builders who agree to the challenge. These do not replace any other activities. Think of these as a virtual grudge match.

Have fun and build some cool stuff!

The crappyest bike wouldn’t necessarily have to win. But the most artistic crappy bike would win.

In the Slick competition, the slickest bike wouldn’t necessarily win but the most artistic slick bike would win.

As far as having enough people who want to enter such a contest, I would feel like an idiot trying to promote this idea very much, when it’s unlikely I may be able to compete. Projects are backing up on me, and at my age that’s not a good thing.

I actually voted for the maggot because it was a working bike and, more importantly, we often create new concepts when we do not have the time to edit out the 'errors' in our pursuit of copying other people's achievements. The bent front fender made me wonder about how much effort we put into making something straight and then making it look rusty. The thought was well worth a vote.

People don’t really know what a maggot bike is. I invented the name and category in 1979 or so, perhaps earlier, because I needed a bike to ride to work in the winter and it was completely cheap and disposable once the salt ate through the frame and the pedals hit the ground. Throw that one away and make another, often from parts people gave me. My first one was a frame snagged from an abandoned mineshaft. It’s a bike that you can ride to the bar, work or class and leave it unlocked. Will it get stolen, yes but mine have ways been recovered a block away as they are so hard to ride. Crooked steering, bent pedals and every part is broken and fixed just enough. Different colors and the wrong fork (26 inch on a 24 inch frame, etc), so that when it’s abandoned and the cops pick it up it’s easy to describe and reclaim. I’ve always found them near where they were stolen, except once and I got it back from the cops. The cop had a look of disgust when I picked it out from a pile of abandoned bikes that were shed stored. Bent wheels so the brakes have to be loosely attached to the fork and stays so that they can swing back and forth to match the wheel wobble. I’ve been known to weld the krp pedals to the crank, seat, seat post fender stays, all welded so they couldn’t be removed. I made one that had the drive on the wrong side so you couldn’t pedal it. That one is attached to a tree on a local mountain bike trail. Hard to steal. That one is unridable bent and every part is welded to the frame.
