Now this is going to be kool!

Just thinking out loud here, but since the bike wheels will likely spin faster than the table top Zoetropev or the turntable; will you space the images on your animation reel farther apart?
There in lies the puzzle...

There are certain fundamental elements of a zoetrope that will make this detail somewhat of an 'Easter Egg'. Usually, you need to be able to isolate the images frame by frame. This is done by looking through a slot in the carousel (on a traditional zoetrope).

With the record version you can use a strobe light, or view it through your camera at 'x' shutterspeed. There is even a multifaceted mirror you can place over the center pin, that reflects the image one frame at a time while the record is playing.

So to answer your question... the spacing can relate to speed, but also to detail. I might have to actually use more images, that are CLOSER together, as a result of more frames per second. Less images (spread farther apart) may result in the animation being choppy, or happening too quickly to appreciate.

I am trying to extrapolate, from a 12" record to a 20" hubcap, how many images to use. I will draw out something simple and tape it to the disc to see how/if it works. I might even try and create a slot for isolation on the frame side of the dropouts so it can be seen with or without a strobe/camera.

@OddJob here's an example of the record playing in the video (12" @ 33 1/3rpm)

On further reflection, my points about the animation being choppy or it happening too fast to appreciate, would only apply in one application- if I make the animation go from center to outer edge, centrifugally. If I only do a band around the edge (or a series of parallel bands), then putting the images farther apart would make it repeat faster yet uninterrupted.

As @Uncle Shish had mentioned on his build thread, it can be difficult to find time to engage online, and build while still maintaining our day-to-day responsibilities.

That is my reality for this buildoff. This has necessitated a level of simplicity in aspects of my build so that I can focus on the 'wow factors' that I know will require more time to execute.

As a 'doctor' (mad scientist), triage is the name of the game.

"What is this 'wow factor' of which you speak?" Well, I'd love to tell you...

Ever heard of a 'zoetrope'?

It's basically like a flipbook laid out in one long strip. When you look through the slot of the 'carousel' you see it one frame at a time (like a flip book), which gives the illusion of animation. Like so...

Noice. I was thinking about knocking off the Cult X Vans tires with different shapes but that's beyond. I can't imagine where you're going to put those viewing slots unless you attach another free spinning disk, but if you're planning on this only being viewable on one side maybe the back side would work with a flashing LED on the frame facing the wheel at night? I think it could offer the same effect if focused on one frame's space. Looking forward to seeing what you do.

Thanks man. I've got a couple ideas, but gonna have to run some R&D to see what works best...

The 'hubcaps' arrived today!

Started to get antsy...BEHRENS is one of those, "You'll get it when you get it." companies. Order confirmation, but no tracking or updates. Last time I did this, I bought them from ACE Hardware. However, neither ACE nor Home Depot will sell 'lid only' anymore, so I had to go through the manufacturer.

I got the replacement lid for a 31 gallon can. If ever you attempt to fabricate your own, though, you'll probably want the next size down for a 20" bike (it's 17" or 18" across). This size will work on a 26" bike. I am using a larger lid this time for a few reasons:

1. You have to massage the tiered structure so that the 'step up' slopes inward, like a gutter, on the 3 inner tiers. Otherwise, it bubbles out too far to have clearance on the drive side.

After

2. The 31 gallon lid has a firm 1.25" lip around the edge, giving it more rigidity for...this

Because I will be attempting a design using dapper punches, the metal is going to want to contract. If I keep the lid in a more ridged structure, I will maintain more integrity of the overall shape until I'm ready to cut it to fit.

Wish me luck.

Oh, and on the smaller lids they give you beautifully spaced indents to drill out for mounting screws.

And the best thing I've found to use, are 2" binding screws with finishing washers. Sturdy and clean like it was made that way 😉

@Ride 'em High
Here's a possibility for viewing the animation on the hub (at least part of it), without the use of a strobe.

This support plate is part of the chainguard assembly on the excerciser I harvested the steertube from. It will mount perfectly to the rear axle, and fill in the corner where the dropout and frame tubing meet. If I punch a viewing window into it, then you should be able to watch a portion of the animation through the window when spinning the wheel without the assistance of a stobe or video recording.

I might even be able to attach a horizontal tab with more viewing windows (thus creating an 'L' bracket), so you can watch each row of animation, and not just the inner ring.

Today was, "Mad dash cross country for paint before sale ended" Day. I basically had to get from New Zealand to Turkey in 1 hour, DURING rush hour.

Thankfully, I made it 10 min before closing. As @Ride 'em High can attest, when Montana cans are on sale, it's time to stack.

So I was looking for a purple, specifically, so I did some digging beforehand, and whaddya know... they happen to have a purple called 'Monster'.

Wanted a rich purple with more magenta undertones than blue. When putting it up against a true magenta, the 'monster' wasn't quite rich enough, so I ended up with 'pimp violett'?!? 😆

Some day I have to try these Montana paints. Which store carries yours, the one in Turkey, I mean.
Usually art supply shops (not arts&crafts, though, like Michaels) some tattoo shops as well.

The 2 places I have found here in Atlanta are BLICK Art Materials, and SAM FLAX. In Denver, I typically went to Meininger's Art Supply. In NYC it was mainly Tattoo shops - I used to go to Tuff City Tattoo.

They dry faster, have way more colors, and have options for clear and varying pressure . Black cans have higher pressure, gold cans lower pressure.

The Pearl Ex looks like fun.
Bro, I am excited about that stuff. Vaguely remember working with it (in combo with embossing powder) back in the day, but have a couple ideas I gotta play around with.
