Hey guys,

So I am going to be working on my first bike build and figured I would get started on the build thread. You may have seen my other post where I talked about getting the frame for this build for free! So how could I not try to build it up?

I have never welded or really worked with metal at all, so luckily the guy who gave me the frame is actually going to help me and teach me his ways... he built a chopper out of a similar frame about 10 years ago (here is a link to pics of his build- http://bikerodnkustom3.homestead.com/gallery168.html)

I want mine to be a little bigger than his so I got a Huffy Cranbrook (for $35) and will be using that as the donor bike. The 26" wheels are a little too big for the rear end that is currently on the frame I have, even if we cut out the spot for the brake so I think the plan is going to be to cut the rear end off of the Cranbrook and weld that onto the chopper frame so it is an easy fit.

I am not sure exactly how long we are going to go with the front end yet, but I believe we are going to get round bar and use that and see how we like different lengths. I want it to be stretched, but nothing super crazy... I want it to look cool, and still be rideable. I was looking at springer front ends, but I am trying to keep my budget down and the ones I like get up there! I am not a huge fan of the old school ones where the spring pokes out the front, but I like the ones that are styled more like motorcycle ones where there are usually 2 springs side by side and run parallel with the fork.

Handlebars- not sure which ones I am going to use yet but I am leaning towards a set I have from a cafe racer motorcycle and will just need to decide which way to flip them... I was also considering using a different set from another huffy cruiser bike and flipping those upside down so they are more low profile and streamlined to the bike... I think that final decision will come as we are working on it. I am thinking about adding a little sheet metal work to add shape to the frame, but again I think that decision will happen on the fly, and I may mock some stuff up with cardboard and place it before we actually start the work to see if I would really like that or would rather keep the frame the way it is.

I think this is going to be a slow build because I don't have any of the stuff to work on the bike myself and will be somewhat at the mercy of the other guy's schedule. Either way, I will be updating as I move forward!

Lastly, paint! I am going to be using a car that was built by West Coast Customs that has an awesome super dark red paint scheme with black wheels... that is the plan as of now at least! All comments and suggestions are welcome as this will be my first build! Thanks!

This is the car from west coast customs that I want to mock the paint scheme off of.

Nice work man! Looks like that back wheels not going to work, unless you are cutting it up some more.

Yeah, when I was setting it up I realized that... so I think the plan is actually going to be to cut off the current rear end and the rear end off the Cranbrook and use the Crankbrook rear end and weld that onto the chopper frame!

Awesome.

And what a lot of cool bikes on that site you linked to!

:)

Yeah! I have been looking on there for inspiration too! I can't wait to get started, the plan is to start this weekend, hopefully get the back ends switched... maybe go find some round bar and mock up the front end... I guess we will see!

Once this is finished you'll be going out to buy some tools and a cheap welder and start your next project, for sure.

;)

haha I have no doubt about that! I have already taken a quick look at some because I am, very much, an instant gratification person! The waiting game for someone else to be free is the hardest part for me!!

Yeah I gave up on that a long time ago.
Everyone always says they can help you with things but it never works out.
Even if they have the best intentions of doing so.

And then you need something else done, and something else....

:)

Ok, the guy helping me was home and we finally got to get started! Here's the update so far:

First tore down the donor bike- it's a Huffy Cranbrook and I will be reusing a lot of parts from it so saving everything we took off.

Then we cut the rear end off the huffy donor and the rear end off the chopper frame. Cut and ground down some areas of the huffy rear end to make welding easier later and we spent a lot of time making sure everything was square and level. He also spent time teaching me things throughout the whole process so I could actually learn what he was doing and then do the work myself (cutting, grinding, welding). I have never done any of this so really starting from scratch.

When we started cutting the Huffy, the tubing goes all the way to the front so we kept those full to see how it would look and we thought it may be pretty cool without cutting those down. I ground spaces in the tubing so the tubes would fit around the main tubing of the chopper frame and be able to be bent around it. I am planning on bringing those together and welding them into a point that comes into the middle of the open space in between the frame.

We tack welded the new rear end to keep it in place and that was all we did for the day today. It will probably be next weekend before we can work on it again but I'm already loving the process of learning to build!

Just eyeballing', but it looks like the lower chain line might hit the frame. I would probably mock up the bb and the crank soon, just in case adjustments are needed before everything gets welded up back there. It's going to be a cool bike though, no doubt about it!

Yeah, we just had everything mocked up and just tack welded for the time being to hold it in place until we can get together again. the next time we are going to make sure everything is straight and fits together and works together so I will make sure to bring that up and make sure we are clear!

I talked to the guy who is helping me build my bike and use his garage... we are doing more work tomorrow morning! Hopefully going to be finishing the frame fab work, maybe starting on the front fork... and starting to mock up a little more! I will hopefully be able to post some updates tomorrow... but by Sunday for sure!

Cool, I have been waiting to see this bike progress!!

ok... we have a little update. didn't get to do a ton, but here we go!

got the rear end fully welded on and got everything a little straighter and even. Also got the bars welded together and then welded on a point at the end and I am really happy with how that turned out.

Next, we cut out the pieces for the springer front end. We had all but one piece based on how much metal plate we had. Also drilled holes in each piece so next time we can get them drilled to the size we need faster. I also stopped by Lowe's and got most of the other stuff I will need for the springer. Unfortunately, that's all for today... but hey, progress is progress!

Hopefully, next week he will be available again and we can bang out some more! Hope you guys enjoy!

Got a tiny bit done today... Unfortunately travel and people getting sick has put the build on hold.

Made the full holes in the plates for the springer, got the seat post placed and welded to the frame and the part where the pedals go ( I don't know the name) placed and welded in place. We also cut down the donor fork just to the steerer tube so we can use that for the springer. I still need 2 of the 1" steel tubes but they didn't have them at the lowes I was at before so I gotta find those. I'm out of town again this coming weekend so hopefully the one after I'll get more done! I love learning more, but man, I hate waiting!! Ha it'll just be that much sweeter when I finish... Sorry, no real good pics from today.

Looking good.

Something to watch out for, that front end is going to have way too much rake. It will be very uncomfortable to ride. There are ways to cheat the forks to compensate for that, so ask your helper friend about that.

I preach to people about rake all the time, they don't listen, and they later admit that they should've listened.
