Back again!
So, after a bunch of messing around trying to make my DIY attempt at a shifter work, I finally gave up and accepted that I couldn't do what I wanted to do because I don't have access to a metal shop.
In the interest of making my bike look nice I ended up getting a Project346...
It would purely be for showing off. I have no intention of holding the middle of the ape hangers. I want to try it out but I want to avoid spending $100 on tape which I'd never use except for this experiment.
I might just photoshop a pic of my bike to get an idea of what it might look like.
Hello, I'm back from hibernation and am getting back on the ball with messing with my bike.
One Idea I had over the winter was wrapping my ape hangers with brown leather handlebar tape instead of going with regular grips. I'd also get a matching brown leather seat and probably do a similar...
Thanks for the input everyone! I think I'll hold off until I can afford one of the higher-end forks. I ride my bike a little rougher than I think a lot of cruisers get due to the hills in my area and the rougher paths in places. I'm not off-roading, but I'm not always just cruising flat asphalt...
Hey everybody,
I've been thinking about the forks on my bike. While the stock ones are decent, I am considering making the front a little more slick. One consideration has been Springer Forks, due in part to the look as well as the pricepoint since they seem to be cheaper than a lot of other...
Not much real progress yet, though I did make a small change to the shifter, covering the whole screw with bolts.
Went riding with the shifter and it's solid. Going to figure out a good end-cap for it soon. Probably just a PVC end with a hole drilled and painted to match the frame.
Anyway...
So I got to spend Father's Day working on my Suicide Shifter setup. I followed the essence of some how-to advice from this site. I picked up a used stem for 8.00 upon which to mount the shifter...
Next came the stick...
I ended up getting a U clamp and a longer screw to act as the stick...
Hmmm...that's a good idea! I don't have one laying around myself but there's a cheapo used bike parts shop in Portland where I could probably pick one up for cheap. That would be a lot sturdier than the PVC alternative.
Thanks!
I'm having a heck of a time getting this set up since I don't really have the gear or spare handlebars to cut pipes and stuff. Does anyone know of an alternative for the mounting? Something that's not the ridiculously priced HBBC mount? Would using a similarly sized PVC pipe work? I feel like...
Got my Nexus 3 hub set up this weekend. The task of redoing all the spokes was daunting...
...but I got it set up.
For now I'm just keeping the shifter on the handlebars until I can decide how I want to go about making and mounting the stick shift. I don't have the ability to cut metal or...
Nice! I lived right by there for a year in Jr. High. Also got my tattoos at the shop in the strip mall that's now on the SW corner of that intersection. I grew up out off of 196th and Farmington. That area's not too different from what it was in the early 80s.
The hills aren't impossible, like San Francisco style. I'd probably be fine with the speed it's at now being the middle of the three speeds. I'm close enough to some flatter areas so I'd still want to be able to get up some speed there.
I'm probably going to do the front break like you're...
Thanks! Yeah it's a pretty nice ride...especially after the Apes. I can't really ride it much where I'm at, though, since there are a lot of hills and it's a single speed haha. Plus the coaster brake isn't as solid as I'd like.
