I picked up a Framed 29er from a guy on Craigslist for $200 BNIB in January after resisting for a month. I rationalized giving in to my bicycle addiction as a way to learn to ride wheelies since I never learned. I can wheelie well enough to clear obstacles but have admired people that can loft the front wheel for blocks, no matter the surface.

My good friend @Karate Chicken Industries introduced me to pump tracks, which I had not considered, and now I'm hooked! The 8" tall bar is a bit much so ordered a Surly Sunrise chromoly bar that is 32.5"wide with 3.5" rise. Much better, especially with my hands on the inside of the grips which effectively makes the bar 30" wide.

I'm really having fun with this bike! Think I'll try a bar I originally had my eyes on that is 30" wide with 6" rise. Should be spot on......

Back in the day I could ride wheelies pretty well. Then I didn't ride for ages and when I finally got back on a new mtb I could barely get the front wheel off the ground. I thought maybe I had completely lost it, but a guy I was with claimed modern frame geometries made it harder to do? I dunno...

Two other things that started to hinder my skills were my eyesight going and freaking bio-pace chain rings. I swear both of those made wheelies more difficult to do.

Or it could just be I've gotten older.

Anyway... keep the rear brake covered and don't try it on bikes with paperboy baskets. I can still remember the feeling of my legs slamming up against them when things got away from me.

I've got an '88 Rock Hopper Comp that I turned into a 1 x 6 with more upright bars. I need to get that biopace ring off the front and see if I can still do it.

They will look at you funny in the ER when you tell them you were pulling wheelies. Especially when you are over 50. I severely sprained my knee and ankle at the same time and couldn't walk it off. I was doing fine until it came over on me.

My XC race hardtail is difficult to wheelie for sure. Just enough to get over stuff. Geometry & positioning for going fast!

I still haven't tried doing wheelies on the 29er made for that kind of thing but feels like it would be pretty easy. Especially with the tall original bar. I think a 6" rise should be perfect.

I had to laugh thinking of doing wheelies with paperboy baskets @DesmoDog ! 🤣🤣 I can see my young self in my avatar trying that.....Once!🤣🤣🤣

People look at me funny anyway!:21::giggle::rofl: Hope you recovered quickly.

Thanks for the reminder. Taking up pump track riding just after turning 58 & hooked. Really started feeling the flow during my 3rd session a week ago. Will start wearing my new helmet now that speed is picking up.....

I don't like being hurt & have a strong survival instinct. Especially at my age. Having said that, I like pushing the edge a bit. If you don't crash once in a while, you aren't trying hard enough.

Quick edit: @billn recently posted his RA29 under 24 pounds.:43:

I haven't been around these parts in awhile, funny how full time jobs do that anyway here's one...

I put different bars, pedals, sprocket, wheels, grips, and saddle on it from stock and it is currently torn down and being stripped of paint, which is a lame time consuming job BTW, and awaiting a new look. I'll post a photoof the in progress soonish. 🤙
