So I aquired this old antique shelf / cabinet from a friend who has had it for 15+ years. I don't have pictures but it's identical to this one...

So the plan is to use some eBay bits and make it look like an old Texaco gas pump but have shelves inside to store stuff. Functional and cool.

On the other side of the coin, I was building engines in a VW shop in Layton Utah, and I was only making five dollars an hour as a mechanic.

I remember cutting up a Kombi so I could haul it off for scrap. The same van would be worth a fortune today.

I bought an ugly running Chevrolet Belair for $100 from the University of Utah. 283, no power, no air, Hydramatic. Paint was falling off of it. Eight years of service in the Rocky Mountains.

It had been maintained in their shop but it was old and used a little oil. I drove it to California where somebody smashed it in the back and I got $300 as junk for it because people in California are crazy for Chevrolets.

Cheapest I remember was 99 cents a gallon and I remember filling up my $100 moped and couldn't fit a whole dollar in it. I'd run for weeks going everywhere and still have fuel. Man those were the days

Today's progress got the cabinet mostly down to bare metal using a razor scraper and a heat gun. So far working great. Still have about a foot near the bottom and some cleanup around the trim. Doesn't have to be perfect just smooth. I also massaged out a few small dents.

Here's what I'm kinda going for. A simple shelf that will have an awesome look to it and be functional as a shelf and a decorative piece.

In paint now. I decided to purposely not use a primer and to not go to bare metal and leave some bits to shine through to simulate a patina like a real gas pump that is used would likely get after a scrape down and respray. Can't wait to get my decals and parts to finish this thing up.

Well it would be cool if you could find the hose and nozzle. Or make up a fake one.

Already ahead of you brother just haven't installed it yet. Scored this pump handle with hose for $14.50 and $12 shipping. Arrived today.

Got in my "Globe" decals for the top. These will be a temporary till I buy a reproduction globe or find something to pull off the look better and order decals to fit that. For now I have a hexagon shaped jar that held lock de icer on our counter at work and I painted it white.

Kinda thinking of getting a traditional flat sided fish bowl, paint it white inside so it looks like milk glass, and smack a few decals on the outside. Maybe even put a light inside it and wire it up.

One of my current clients used to own a company that made reproduction gas pumps and accessories for the vintage market. His barn has an entire, freestanding, working 1930's gas station built inside the barn. Working pumps, register, ice boxes....... amazing

Drilled a few holes in the side and made a little clip to hold the pump handle so it can't slide down far enough to come out and it pulls off the look. Going to get a different globe later.
