One of the first bikes I restored had a bio pace. I really struggled to get the front derailleur aligned. Not sure if it was just my inexperience or if they truly are a royal pain.

Yeah that's what I did not understand. You're supposed to set that front mech a certain distance from the teeth. However there's different distances depending on how the crank is rotated! I wish I had made a note or a mark of some sort before I took it off. Instead, I am replacing the crank
 
Just use the high spot on the ring for clearance when setting the front mech. A couple mm clearance and you should be good. If I remember, it helps to time your shift with the ring as well when going to a bigger ring to make it smoother.
