I ordered spokes that are coming from China and which are taking forever to arrive and it's got me thinking. Where do you get parts from? I have to buy a new axle and hubs not to mention more spokes and minor things and I like to actually hold the parts in my hand before buying but the local bike shops don't seem to like home mechanics. Should I keep trying to find a friendly bike shop or just order from Amazon and get a non bike related hobby to fill the time I wait for deliveries?

Bicycle spokes are a funny thing! I definitely try to use name brand such as Will Smith, ( that's a talk to text failure I have to leave)
WHEEL SMITH!

The modern LBS is geared towards pushing new inventory, they need to in order to cover their massive overhead. A few of the old ones still exist, if you are lucky you can still find owners who are interested in saving the classic stuff. But yeah, they'll tell you that it's better to buy a new one than fix an old one, it's their model. That Husky site Cap listed carries a ton of stuff, and their reputation is strong. I'd love to take on a build with one of their step through industrial frames, but they're never in stock. I think they're custom order...

Husky is how I keep my spares full. Order 8-10 tubes, couple of chains, lucky 7 sprockets three or more at a time. Saves on shipping

  • I always look on a Dutch craigslist for second hand parts.
  • classic-cycle.com
  • bikestoremember.com (worth to take a look! Awesome parts and bikes. Also US bikes).
  • For generic parts there are some stores/webshops available.
  • Skatepro for bearings, tires sometimes.
  • custom cruisers in the Netherlands for neat parts.

Thank you all for your valuable information. Looks like I'll be using that seeing as my spoke package is MIA. Doesn't even look like it made it out of China! I'd laugh if I wasn't so close to finishing my nephews wheel.
