This thread is for us to post up any prizes we want to give away for Build Off 18

First off we all get a cool bike that we each have built as our own prize if we finish! But to sweeten the pot, anyone that feels like going one step further can award a prize based on whatever criteria that you choose. Just keep in mind that it is possible that your prize may require International shipping (in the past we have usually been able to pool together funds to help offset any international shipping though). You can post what you plan to give your prize for and post pictures of the prize if you have them. This is all voluntary and works on the honor system.

Everyone's pal @ifitsfreeitsforme kicked us off right with the Thompson challenge so I'll continue the action

1st place in each category will get a custom laser placard from me commemorating their achievement

Let that CNC burn wood baby!

Also!!!!!!

I will choose 1 recipient for the Captains IHT (I'd Hit That) award for bike most likely to be something I'd add to my stable

... also, please be aware that if you're sending a prize overseas, the receiver may have to pay a fee to accept it. I just found out at my local P.O. that grips sent to Berlin, Germany will cost SwissGuy $16 (USD)! I think it's an "airport tax"? Apparently this fee has always been, but it's only recently that the P.O. knows it at the time of the transaction, so they can tell the person mailing the item. The fee cannot be paid in advance by the person mailing the item.

So between the $17 mailing fee, and the $16 airport tax, a pair of grips are now at $50 (including price of grips). Crazy right?

anyway, just thought I'd pass this along. I'll PM SwissGuy now.

I will be awarding the OddJob Award to a handful of winners (literally, 5 winners) for the 9th year in a row!

The bikes, which have a combination of real and faux-tina, and kool kustomization, epitomize the rat rod bicycle in my own weird RaT-ionalizations. Whether scratch RaT, pack RaT, or sophistic-RaT, they all have met my RaT-ionale for what is most RaT-isfying.

Each OddJob Award winner will be mailed a custom made, straight out of the BACK40, award formed from a gang utility metal box cover, a magnet, custom vinyl graphics, and painted this year with the same RaT-ina as my Midriff-ter build in BO 18. The award will be accompanied by a Certificate of Autho-RaT-zation declaring these rat rod bikes as the BO 18 OJ winners!

That is quite something, but worth it when you win a prize imho.

Love the prize ideas. When the time in the coming years allows it, I would love to create some prizes.

Both prize winners have had their grips shipped. Thanks everybody for your interest in this thread. Congrats to the two speedy builders.

GTB!

I will let you guys know if I really had to pay the tax...
btw: When I got the OddJob Award for my trike build Ididn't have to pay any pick up taxes. So somehow it depends on the item or whatever the post office cooks up as a possible fee.... Who knows... 🤷‍♂️

It depends how it is sent, best to keep it flat and in a envelope or padded. Also what you write on it for customs. I have been told that the person sending should write gift, value $2. Customs has really become greedy here in the eu...

The OddJob Awards for RRB Build Off 18 are ready to go!

Here was my process in creating the awards the past few days. The BACK40 is still busy, even though Midriff-ter has reached it's completion for the build off.

I start with a bare metal gang utility box cover, and spray it with my main color. Then I apply the OddJob Award vinyl sticker I get from thestickermantom on ebay as I have for the past 9 years. He has many colors and fonts, and even took the time to download my 'swung note' font when I requested it!

The lettering is rubbed on with a Bondo shaper tool, paper peeled back, and then the fun begins.

I used the same paint cans I worked with on my Midriff-ter build this year. The OJ always reflects my build off bike in appearance, or as close as I can get anyway. A little brown, a little vintage white, a little flat black; all from a distance. And then the textured spray from the 'top down'. Then a #0000 steel wool rub from the 'bottom up', and we get a bit of the look from the Midriff-ter. Finally, a Matte Clear to preserve the RaT-ina.

And the finished product....

Now it's up to you builders! Get those 'last month of the build off' finishing touches completed and if your build tickles my fancy, who knows....you may be an OJ Award winner for BO 18 !!

Been doing some design work on this years awards during my travel delays. Should be all set to personalize for the winners when the time comes

After one month* the grips finally got delivered today. No fee, just a signature was necessary.
Thanks again for the price! I'll try and find a good place for them in one of my future builds or on one of my older ones. We will see...

. . . the parcel spent three weeks at the international hub in Jamaica NY...

That reminds me of the last time I ordered a computer. I think I bought it through New Egg and it had to go from Florida to Ohio before it could come to California.

It spent three weeks on a loading dock in Ohio, while I was calling around the country trying to find out where my new computer was.

I’ve been very hesitant to get involved in any overseas shipping because of my experiences with the post office.

I was looking at the idea of importing a used Soviet bicycle from Poland, until I looked into the cost and decided I’d rather have a new Honda. It was just too much money to spend on a curiosity.

I once mailed a birthday present to a former coworker's daughter across town, and it took 1-1/2 months to arrive. It went to Oklahoma first.

Preliminary computer work done. Should be able to customize for the winners and hopefully get out soon after the final votes are cast!

Still have 2 from last year sitting here on my desk for @kingfish254 and @Dr. Tankenstein , the guys that live the closest to me of all the irony 🤣

I'll be bringing back the favorite final foto contest that I have done several times in the past. The winner will receive a poster size high resolution print suitable for framing of their bike along with build off graphics.

The winner will be determined by popular vote. Every member will get one vote only! I will set up a voting booth sometime after the build off voting is underway. The photo will be the same as the build off photo.

This is all about the photo! It doesn't have to be your favorite bike necessarily although it can be. For example, in 2015 the winner of the favorite final foto actually placed 37th in the build off vote!

Here's an old post that has good tips for taking good photos. Feel free to add to it if you have any other good tips.
