Here's how it all began in Canada. Sounds like the start of a joke.
"In 1980, a Canadian walks into a shop (owned by Gary Fisher), and buys two (of Tom Ritchey's) bikes and brings them to Vancouver"

This is important. BMX Action Magazine review of the first Ritchey Mountain Bike. Shows how BMX was really there pushing the ATB revolution. The author seems to recognize the limitations of 20" BMX, and that 26" ATB is the next big thing

The BMX ads are absolutely killer as well. What a time to have been a cyclist :inlove: 🥰

*Edit: too bad I was only 3 at the time

I wonder if Charlie Kelly wrote that article. He wrote a lot of the early mountain bike articles under various names. I've got several copies of his Fat Tire Flyer magazine that are a fun ride back into the early days. I'll have to go back through this thread when I get some time. Lots of good stuff here!

It's possible, but I don't think so. After you mentioned that, I looked at his old site. It lists a bunch of articles he wrote back then, then the BMX Action is listed in a different section, where he doesn't take credit. It's an old site, so the link to the article is busted, that's probably why I didn't see it before a guy posted scans of his physical copy on another forum. I've read just about everything here:
