    1987 Mongoose Decade

That's a beautiful bike! Nicely done. The kids, and their dad, are going to love it!

    MBBO BAD INFLUENCE!

That could be the case with the metallics under the Metalcast. But that's two thin coats I put on. I found the coverage to be, um, really bad on the metallics. And the pigment obscures the metallic. Maybe I should have done some clear before the Metalcast. Now on the glitter test patch I...

    MBBO Won’t finish: Savage B.O.B.

Does this fender make my tire look too big?

    Absolutely!

    MBBO BAD INFLUENCE!

Now that it’s dry I do like this version better. So I think I’ll do the red Metal Specks with 2 light coats of red Metalcast and 3 coats of clear. Autozone shows it all in stock. It’s an hour away so the rest of the day will be running errands. Hopefully I can paint tomorrow.

That’s Metal Specks with 2 coats of Metalcast and 3 coats of clear. In person it looks the same as Metal Specks with just 3 coats of clear.

    MBBO BAD INFLUENCE!

I’m being reminded of why I gave up on trying to do shiny paint jobs so many years ago. I’m just too impatient and ham fisted and it takes way too much time.

    MBBO BAD INFLUENCE!

I did a few test patches on an old, unprepped chain guard. Metalcast red over gold metallic, silver metallic and Metal Specks red. Also plain clear over Metal Specks red. And I sprayed a few coats of Metalcast red over my red glitter paint test that had 3 coats of clear over it. That one comes...

    1956 Schwinn American survivor find

I haven’t done it myself but guys use 0000 steel wool, WD40 and lots of elbow grease. I’m sure there are other methods that work too. Maybe others will chime in.

Cool bike! Welcome to the forum. You can probably remove that gold paint down to the original if there's any still on there, if that's what you are into. 👍

    MBBO BAD INFLUENCE!

Thanks! I didn't get any pics but I ground the rest of the chrome off the fender and got it in etch primer. Then everything got a couple of coats of filler primer. More sanding tomorrow. I've got some paints to play with now too so I'll be doing some testing to nail down the final paint...

    MBBO BAD INFLUENCE!

I’m deleting the fender struts so I cleaned off the chrome around the holes and buzzed them shut with the wire welder. A little filler and it’ll be fine. 👍

This is cool! Can’t wait to see what you come up with. 👍

Thanks! My shoulder and elbow aren't thanking me right now, but the bike is looking a whole lot better!

Hours of sanding later… The frame, forks and chain guard are in etch primer. The fender needs a couple of holes welded up then sanding down and primer. In a few days I should be ready for filler primer and a lot more sanding. 👍

Use a cheap cable lock laced with Det cord. That should slow them down a bit

Prepping the frame for primer. The citrus stripper did ok overnight but there was still quite a bit left. I burned out some of the worst with the propane torch and am doing the rest by hand with 220 grit sand paper. Too much time, I need to look into getting a blaster for future projects.

    MBBO Re-Factored... (Crazy Lady)

Wow, the lighting came out great! Shouldn't have any trouble seeing or being seen on that one.
