    Forgotten Dahon

I looked and sure enough, they make a carrying bag for these folders. Under ten bucks, but had to be shipped from China.

    Forgotten Dahon

After changing out the heavier cranks and removing the handbrakes, it's only 26 lbs.

    Forgotten Dahon

All done. I didn't add the rack back on to save space when I pack in in the car. Or it might fit in a suitcase. I'm going to have a sack made to carry it in. I took it for a short ride, lots of rain today, flood warnings are up.

    Possible 1937 Hawthorne

Not really needed, a B with a Square would be a hub made 3rd quarter in 1936. That would probably be on a 37 bike as parts may have been stocked up before the bikes were made. I've now added Musselman hubs to my notes.

    Forgotten Dahon

I checked the old headset and it looks better than the new sets I have, so I just changed out the bottom cup that was missing chrome. I used my big clamp to press the cups in. I just need to do little adjustments and add a few links to the chain and I'm riding! This thing is very light...

    Forgotten Dahon

The wife took the wheels in for truing. I usually go along but she's got a meeting to go to and I would have to wait around for a couple hours. Three wheels in all, these two and the one for the BMX bike.

    Armstrong - Secret Locking Mechanism

The headbadge says Birmingham. When Raleigh took over they were all made in Nottingham. It may be a 50's bike. If you have the rear 3 speed wheel, the 2 digit date will be stamped on the hub shell. Like this one made in the ninth month of 1952:

    ** The next build off 2024 **

You would have to provide some support, maybe weld in another tube?

    Armstrong - Secret Locking Mechanism

Nice English bike. Loosen the bolt on the stem (in red) then tap it with a hammer to free up the stem so it will come out. Being that old it may not want to cooperate. Then loosen the cap nut using channel locks or whatever big wrench will fit the nut (in green). The threads look rough so it...

Firestone - I Found the Klunker Frame.

It's made by Monark, so most probably 50's. There may be a plate on the bottom bracket. It'll have a serial number and model number that can give you the year.

    Forgotten Dahon

The spindle is a narrow one, none of my extras will work. But it cleaned up well enough to use, just adding a new bearing where the old one fell apart. I also cleaned and lubed the folding pedals. The bearings were dry, so I squeezed grease into them. I painted the other parts black and they...

    Forgotten Dahon

The wheelset is ready to go to the shop for truing along with the wheel I swiped the hub from. The BMX bike will now be freewheel. The paint is drying, it will get clear coat tomorrow.

    Possible 1937 Hawthorne

On this frame it looks like an upsidedown B and a square. It needs to be wirebrushed to be seen better.

Plenty of room here on the forum. Also, make them fullsize when you add them, there's always seems to be enough bandwidth for that. Thanks!

They stamped the hubs in the same place, on the brake side of the shell. That 1937 horn works? Whoever took out the batteries did you a big favor.

How do you name your build?

Here in the Philippines, all vehicles get a nickname. My wife's vehicle is Angel, wings are on the way to apply to the rear of her new Angel. I'll add my ratrodbikes decal to the window at the same time, then apologize if she notices. My bikes all have names that are in keeping with the bike...

    Possible 1937 Hawthorne

Can you post some pics of that hub from the sides to get a full look at the area where the number would be? The metal was stamped so I think something will show if I enhance the image. The seat and pedals don't show signs of much wear, so the hubs and everything may be in good shape. Women and...

    Forgotten Dahon

I looked at the prices of new Dahons, 600 bucks at a minimum! I looked at some in the mall last week, not too bad for about 250 bucks. If the wife likes the Dahon I'm building I'll get her one of these at the mall. For me, I would go to the bike shops around town and try to find a scrap one and...

    Forgotten Dahon

All I've seen are 16 and 20. If 20's will fit, I'd go with them. There is much more selection of 20" tires and wheels. Especially the good road tires. I'm using budget priced wider tires so I can go offroad if need be and also the roads here are rough, no nice paved bike paths yet. But still a...

    TRADITIONAL The Pensioner

I needed a trainer down in the shop for when it gets too smoky or hot up on the Lanai. So, Pensioner got a trainer and barefoot pedals along with a big seat. That makes two buildoff bikes that aren't going anywhere.
