Bike from the Dead's Mockup Mash

Took advantage of the cooler weather between yesterday and today to continue the Mockup Mash on two step-thrus! I didn't make a ton of progress until late last night, as most of the parts I threw on my prewar Monark that day just weren't working. It wasn't until I threw some recently-acquired...

    ** The next build off 2024 **

Forward and down. Looks like the front mount is on the top tube and not the down tube!

    ** The next build off 2024 **

@Pondo also has a really good step-thru inspiration thread going as well.

I think the seat tube on Rosalin Drussel's bike is bent. Also what's up with the chain guard placement? Actually, the more I look at her bike, the more obvious it is that that bike has been ridden hard. She must have been klunkin' that thing! Love the Snyder that Jan Sterling is riding, and...

Bike from the Dead's Mockup Mash

How do you find the bead size on tires and wheels? I would imagine tires have it marked on the sidewall somewhere, but most older wheels don't say what the bead size is, or they're too rusty to tell anyway.

Bike from the Dead's Freshly-Exhumed Finds (Everything I've dug up since 6/15/21)

Thanks! Yeah, it's a 24". Thanks! Yeah, I definitely love the stance on this. Personally, I feel like a set of shorter handlebars would make it look sleeker and even more aggressive. Thanks! Will do!

Bike from the Dead's Freshly-Exhumed Finds (Everything I've dug up since 6/15/21)

Now for my favorite acquisition from this weekend: the chrome Spaceliner with the legendary fiberglass convertible tank made by @The Renaissance Man. This bike didn't come with the wheels, tires or the blue top half of the handlebar stem; I added those to get a better idea of what this bike...

Bike from the Dead's Freshly-Exhumed Finds (Everything I've dug up since 6/15/21)

And now on to the latest update! Just last Friday, Dad and I checked out the 57th Annual Ozarks Antique Auto Club swap meet in Springfield, Missouri for the first time in 5 years. I was hoping to find at least a few parts and maybe some new projects while I was there, but I didn't expect to...

Bike from the Dead's Freshly-Exhumed Finds (Everything I've dug up since 6/15/21)

Earlier this month, Dad was gifted this 1962 Schwinn Typhoon when the original owner visited his shop. According to Dad, the original owner was given this Schwinn when he was 9-10 years old. It had been sitting under his front porch for I don't know how long, until just about everything...

Bike from the Dead's Freshly-Exhumed Finds (Everything I've dug up since 6/15/21)

Later on in June, while I was down in Texas house/pet-sitting for my brother and sister-in-law, I met up with a guy through Facebook Marketplace who was selling a bunch of bike parts, and I came home with a small bundle for $35. I got 3 seats, a NOS pink seat to go with some pink wheels I have...

Bike from the Dead's Freshly-Exhumed Finds (Everything I've dug up since 6/15/21)

Ok, time to update this thread again! Back on June 1st, I checked out the Port City VW Show in Catoosa, Oklahoma once again. The cool thing about this show is that not only is it a great VW show, but it's also a great bike show! They even have events for all the folks that bring their bikes to...
  12. Bike from the Dead

    ** The next build off 2024 **

Thanks! I hadn't seen this one before either. I got it and a bunch of other parts from James Allen, the guy who's been running the Springfield Bicycle swap meet and local bicycle museum for longer than I've been alive. He was selling it and some other stuff for the wife of a friend who's in bad...

    ** The next build off 2024 **

That they do. Decoluxe is easily one of your best builds, and the whole reason I wanted one of these frames in the first place. Funny you should mention that bike, as the frame got tossed in with another step-thru bike I bought at the Springfield, Missouri swap meet this past weekend. One with...
  14. Bike from the Dead

    ** The next build off 2024 **

I just picked up another bucket list bike frame that could be a solid contender for the Step-Thru Build Off: a prewar curved seat tube Elgin! I don't know if I'll enter this one or not yet, but it'd be a fun one to build for sure!

    ** The next build off 2024 **

I can see the potential! That Huffman's got a slick tank!

    Step-Thru inspiration

Those bikes are my kind of crazy! I want to build somethin' like that!

Bike from the Dead's Mockup Mash

I haven't played around with that wheel and tire since I mocked it up back then. It wasn't just Schwinn and British bikes that used 26" x1 3/8" tires. This Murray came with them originally, and in fact, basically all skinny wheel bikes, at least in the U.S., used them in the 1950s-1970s. So in...

Bike from the Dead's Mockup Mash

I tried a few more Monark mockups last week, mostly playing around with 24" front wheels and forks, but nothing really clicked for me. This may be one of those projects where I need to trace over it in Photoshop and get everything to be the same color in order to really see the potential of this...
