Wow, a banana seat that actually looks like a banana...that's a couple days over ripe.

Nah...I get what you're saying. A forstner bit might be an even better choice--create a flat-bottomed hole, the size of the tape coil, to the desired depth, then run the belt sander across the whole surface. Brilliant!

That's pretty much what I suspected, and it's tough to be consistent holding it by hand. I'm trying to think of a simple jig that can help with that and is easy to make. How about something like this, where the coiled tape can be wedged inside. The interior depth is the same dimension you...

I have disassembled such a pedal in the past, and the results were not pretty. Fortunately in my case, I did not intend to preserve the outer shell, which you're likely to find is actually two cups and a cylinder. (I only wanted the spindles for "poor man's thread chasers.") If you were to...

You have a lot of good information already. The only thing I see faulty is that it isn't a Spaceliner/Flightliner frame--just a typical Murray cantilever. I'd say your estimate on early to mid '60s is accurate. What is that thing mounted on the handlebars? Radio? Plenty of potential...

Yeah, lay something flat against the top side so the removal is consistent. Even a popsicle stick would do the job.

That's a pretty dramatic change as it is!

Like I said, wrap a zip tie around the bundle and it can't unfurl. Now, it's more like a solid disc than a tape.

I'm not sure what tools you have available, but could you try coiling the tape measure into a tight bundle, then holding that against a belt sander or other abrasive surface? Perhaps secure the bundle with a zip tie so it doesn't unwind during the process. THERE'S a surface you can work with!

Is that a snap ring? I can't really tell from the photo.

Hmmm... I'd probably be looking at modifying BMX gyro cables--they split 1-into-2 right out of the box. The problem might be length, since the lowers only run between the brake and the headtube. They may prove too short. If you can find one long enough, it would provide an elegant solution...

I think Matti already replicated most of the details in his Tips & Trix thread.

Wow...what a transformation! I think I would have walked right past that GT in its original state.

I'm investing in shares of Evaporust before the market closes. Thanks for the stock tip!

Always be looking for new ideas. Here's one that's great for the small stuff, like bearing balls, cones, etc.

    CanTANKerous -- 1953 Roadmaster

While I missed the deadline, I haven't exactly given up on this build. The sticking point has been that, at some point in its history, the non-drive side pedal was "repaired"...with a welder. Guy did a really neat job and I didn't even notice the flaw until I went to take the pedal off. Not...
