I haven't done anything with this bike besides ponder which direction I want to go with it. I am leaning toward rigid fork, single speed, light weight urban assault bike. The suspension is seized. I looked at the Steed spring conversion but don't think I would be happy with it. One problem I...

Cottered cranks definitely have some cool factor as they have fallen out of popular use. Where a lot of people go wrong with them is they must be pressed in and out rather than hammered. They are soft metal that deforms to the bore for the correct fit. I even mark them side to side to get the...

I rode observed trials for several years (motorcycle) and at a lot of events there would also be sections for bicycle trials. Monty bikes were pretty well represented. I think they are out of the trials sport these days.

Judy, Rockshox quadra R21. It looks like an easy rebuild.

These bikes have a cult following it seems. There is a 79 page thread at MTBR on Bontrager bikes. From what I have read so far, this bike stickered around $1700 when new. I don't know much about this ones history other than it most recently survived a year as a college campus transporter.

I'm normally not real interested in mountain bikes due to the general lack of mountains and off road opportunities around here. When this one popped up for sale locally as a parts bike though, I snagged it quick. It's an XL size which is what I ride. 100% handmade in the USA, tig welded, cromoly...

The frame with those black rims are going to be a good look.

    The Wright Special

Bond a thick piece of leather to the underside with a leather glue and then fill the split with glue after the bonded piece is cured.

This is a tool I have that is specifically designed to remove English drive side cups. You could probably make something like this without too much trouble. They can be a real booger to bust loose.

I was starting to wonder if I was the only one here that has seen The Point.

    Great looking bike!

Yesterday was my first full day of retirement so naturally a water line under my house sprung a leak. After doing the 4 hour penalty of fixing that, I made a brake bridge. Then it was a 2 hour round trip to go weld it. The welder I used was just fine but the battery in the auto hood was dead...

When I saw the ad, I went during my lunch break from work to go get it before someone else snatched it up.

Great starting point! The Mead frame and fork look to be in pretty nice condition. I'll definitely be keeping tabs on this build.

I like your frame better than mine. The story behind the Retrospec was a man locally needed to move and his son had left it with him. After several requests, his son didn't come and get it and the father posted it for sale cheap just to get it gone. The front wheel has a wobble but it also has...

It is a suggestive name. :giggle:

The fork has a hole for a caliper. I'm using as much of the parts of both bikes as possible and keeping the spending down.

A hasty mock up. Instead of looking more modern with the newer wheelset and fork, to my eye it actually looks older. My plan to replace the flip-flop hub with a New Departure coaster was foiled when I counted spokes and holes, 32 vs 36. Drats! The flip-flop gets to come along for the ride...

This build has no point and that is the point. Named Oblio from the protagonist in the 1971 animation The Point, I will be building a 1933 Shapleigh Wonder badged Columbia. A couple of years ago, I purchased the bike in NW Indiana where it had been exhumed from a long term storage in a farm...

A quick education on Gravel bikes and where to ride them

Tunnel Hill Trail in southern Illinois is another of my bucket listers. From here there are many options for scenic gravel bike rides within a couple hours drive; SW Michigan, NW Illinois, southern Illinois, SE Missouri, NE Iowa. Looks like it is time to dust off my camping gear.
