Removing a broken, frozen, aluminum stem from a steer tube with drain cleaner

43 hours: Not much left. At this point it would be easy to remove the rest with a chisel, AKA flat head screwdriver, but this is science so back in the drain cleaner until it is completely gone.

Removing a broken, frozen, aluminum stem from a steer tube with drain cleaner

It wasn't my first choice but this is from a springer and the lower end is blocked with the through tube for the pivot bolt preventing tapping the stem through. The piece is too long to just hammer down to the bottom because it would prevent the new stem from be seated properly. $14 for the...

Removing a broken, frozen, aluminum stem from a steer tube with drain cleaner

The photo with the foot was prior to setting up the apparatus. I keep an old pair of Vans slip-ons in my garage for when work begins.

A good run at it and lots of fun had; still a success.

Removing a broken, frozen, aluminum stem from a steer tube with drain cleaner

19 hours. A layer of dissolved aluminum sediment is now in the bottom of the jar. Erosion of the stem piece is getting significant. There is no visible change to the paint or metal on the steer tube.

2nd by the pond shows it best for your top photo, overhead on the bricks shows the handlebars best.

Removing a broken, frozen, aluminum stem from a steer tube with drain cleaner

After 5 hours. While lifting it out of the jar dissolved aluminum forms a cloud. The erosion to the remainder of the stem is quite apparent. Back in the jar overnight.

Removing a broken, frozen, aluminum stem from a steer tube with drain cleaner

I saw the lye method but couldn't find any locally. I checked the progress a little while ago and something is happening, the drain cleaner is getting cloudy and there is a scummy film floating on top.

I have to admit, when you posted your build plans, I did not expect to see this build finish. Well done!

Removing a broken, frozen, aluminum stem from a steer tube with drain cleaner

When I mooched the handlebars from my HBBC cruiser to use on my build off bike I discovered the aluminum stem was broken and siezed inside the steer tube. This morning I dismantled the fork to remove the offending broken part and tried cutting and splitting it followed by heat and penetrating...

Is the Muscle Bike Build Off Annual?

That bike has such a cool vintage look & paint. I was going to use a sad emoji because I'll be competing against it :21:.

    Basket-Case 🛒

I always enjoy your completely off the wall builds. One minor quibble; I realize transporting Basket-Case might not be easy, but could you post some photos with a different color background to bring out the frame and fender?

Is the Muscle Bike Build Off Annual?

I've got 1892 and 1933 skinny 28"s that are ready for a build off. A friendly competition might be the motivation I need to get one done.

Wicks Bike Shop in Grant Park might have what you need. I haven't made it there yet myself but an article in the Daily Journal said he has a few hundred vintage bikes. If you can get just a barrel, I have everything else needed to put a cable together.
