    Golden, rules!

I’m trying to not buy anything for this one, just use the parts that I have for now. So it’ll probably be a little more of a bmx/klunker style build.

    Golden, rules!

I’m going to test out some tires tonight if I get a chance. Was it the rear or the front fork that was limiting the tire? I’m sure it’s close on both ends. I’d like 2.125 if they’ll fit. I have a wider fork.

    Golden, rules!

I don’t know that there was much significance or not, but it felt like they were making a lot of changes on these bikes to begin with. I have a 1961 varsity, which is where they switched to ten speed from eight speed mid year. Also it has the jockey shifter for the front. It has an oval...

    Golden, rules!

My other build in this category has slowed a little, just waiting for a good time to get some paint on it. I got thinking that I should have enough parts to throw together another off road machine, and this one doesn’t require paint. I picked up this 1965 varsity a few years ago. I would have...

This build has a great look!

    The Vacation

I really like the profile of these rims. It’s really close to what the old wood rims looked like. Normally that is very close to color I would choose, but this one is going to have a fairly unconventional paint job.

    The Vacation

Got the tires mounted and the wheels stuck on for a quick mock-up. I’m really liking the look. Feels like 27.5 is a good size and they fit with plenty of room to spare. Should probably clear on a middleweight frame too. I’m really liking the direction that this one has taken. A little more frame...

    The Vacation

Got the wheels laced up. I’ll true then when I make a final decision on the color of the bike. Most likely they will stay black.

    The Vacation

Spokes came in. The sizes I needed apparently aren’t a standard size. I found that Porkchop had custom cut stainless spokes for a very reasonable price. They seem to be good quality too. Hopefully I’ll get some wheels built in the next couple of days!

    Haroing

I’ve never had a problem with acetone. To be on the safe side I would try a different clear. Or test it on a small area.

In my head when I checked the vin it was 59, but I could be wrong.

I do see tornados from time to time, but definitely not as often. I picked one up a few years back when I bought a big lot of vintage bikes and parts. It’s probably the next bike I’ll build. I can’t quite remember if it’s late 50’s or early 60’s.

That typhoon looked really nice in the pictures.

This is where I got them. They have them in a bunch of colors. https://carsoncitybikeshop.com/rim-se-bikes-27-5-584x36-j36u-36-bk-nmsw/

    The Vacation

@OddJob I agree. Even from the photos when I first got it the bike had an off-road vibe. I think it’s had enough damage that an actual klunker might not be the best idea, but a fire road/dirt road racer should be cool. I’m a huge fan of the rounded rims, debating if I’m going to paint them cream...

    The Vacation

I think this bike might be taking a slightly different direction. Will possibly have to go into the off road section if I go this way. A while back I bought a set of these sawtooth tires because they were cheap and I thought the tread pattern was cool. I had ordered some SE 27.5” rims but...

    The Vacation

The bike has definitely seen some klunking! I think the rear wheel is an s2 rim with an early bendix like you said, but when I took off the tire the rim is separating/splitting. There’s not much on this bike that hasn’t been broken. Once I got the paint cleared off the bottoms bracket I could...

    The Vacation

it’s definitely got some paint on it. Doesn’t look to have much damage, but it’s hard to tell. It a planes and trains headbadge and should looks like this under the paint.

    Tips n Trix

It works really well. It’s a trick I saw a long time ago on this site. The trick is to not go too fast.
