What Clear coat to use with new paint job?

If Duplicolor makes a clear I'd use that. Number of coats depends on what you're trying to do. Follow the directions on the can? I'd use just enough to bury the graphics you're trying to cover. If you aren't trying to bury graphics and it's not a base/clear system, I wouldn't use a clear coat...

How did you come up with your AVATAR ? And Screen Name ?

Way back in the day I used to have a username that I used everywhere. So late one night I"m signing on to a new forum and as it turns out some miscreant has already used MY name. The nerve of some people. So I'm sitting there trying to think of a new name when into the room wanders my dog...

    Rusty chain restoration

Reminds of my days as a bike mechanic. We had a contract to service all the Airdynes in a local health club and one day I was called over to fix every one of them. It seems a maintanence guy there decided muriatic acid (IIRC) would be a really fast way to clean all of the chains. I got to...

    Motorcycle-style headlight, anyone?

I have a couple similar style lights in some old Ducatis and I put an Acewell speedo in one of them. It took a simple adapter ring but it means I can use and size wheel/tire since it's all electronic. If you don't want to use a magnet and sensor set up, they also have a gizmo that screws into a...

    Typhoon Too

I gave up on waiting for good weather and took a couple shots in my basement. The finished build thread has been posted, and the Typhoon is now considered done. Until I start riding it and changing things.

    Typhoon Too Finished

The finished bike Build thread is here https://ratrodbikes.com/threads/typhoon-too.116655/ The weather isn't cooperating for decent pics so I'll post up a couple from my disaster area of a shop along with something from earlier when the Typhoon was done but not really. Here we see the two...

    Typhoon Too

Yikes! I came here to take the latest pics and post a finished build thread... only to find I never took finished pics! Oops. Well, it's done. I'll be posting a finished thread after I take a few pictures tomorrow! (I hope...) I'm looking forward to doing a little bombing around on this in the...

    1956 Schwinn Racer Finished Bike

I thought I was going to take nicer pictures of this, but that's not looking good so I'll post up the finished thread and get on with other things... I bought it because the front fender has a fin on it. That's only a slight exageration, I've been looking for a 1962 Schwiin on and off for a...

    Worksman INB geometry

I don't think there's a standard for reporting frame sizes. Back in the day I'm not even sure if Schwinn did it the same model to model. Tape measures will get you close enough. Keep in mind if the bike has a suspension, a lot of these are simply baseline numbers. Add springs and frame...

    Typhoon Too

I brought the frame in to the co-op last weekend and tightened up the bottom bracket. When I got home I put the crank arms on for real and was surprised at how much further they pulled on to the spindle when tightened down. Enough that I was getting some light rubbing. Off came the arms and out...

    '77 Sunset Strip - 1977 Schwinn Sting-Ray Refresh

I may be if he's not OddJob and I have already "discussed" this, but I worked at Tonka Schwinn for about ten years, starting a year or two after this bike was sold. I still have a couple of those bike shop stickers around here somewhere... They later changed their name to "Tonka Cycling and...

AMF Debutante and unknown Huffy girls' bikes ID, Value and Potential

I'm basing this more on motorcycle experience than bicycles, but I think if there was money to be made fixing up and selling old bikes like that, you would already see fixed up old bikes like that for sale. These won't have a big draw as collector bikes due to make/style/condition so they'd have...

    TWOJS FRESH FINDS

Well don't quote me on this... but if I were the kind of guy who tried stuff like this I might try lightly clamping a large adjustable wrench on the closed end of the dropout (jaws of wrench perpendicular to the dropout slot) to keep it from folding, and then smacking the open end with, oh, I...

    Monochrome Motocross

To me it looks like the bottom of the slot has been crushed in a bit so it's undersized, but I also wonder if the post isn't a touch oversized? I'd measure the OD of the tube well below of where it's been clamped, then measure the thickness of the tubing to do something of a reality check. If...

    Typhoon Too

I fell into the marketing hype this year and bought a bunch of stuff over Black Friday and Cyber Monday and whatever else they call it to stretch out the sales. Anywhos, one of those things was a new bottom bracket for the Typhoon, so I could improve the chainline and put the worn out one back...

Well if we're being honest, I look at it as there was a bicycle in the foreground, but... :giggle:

What do you bust out when you have a need for speed?

For me  Honestly, I haven't had a "speedy" bicycle for over 30 years... most recently this is as close as I've come. A cruiser with a 5 speed IGH that rides better than I expected it would.

Rims...a question about the pros & cons...

I'm not sure about rim widths. It seems everyone is using narrower rims than I remember back in the day when I did this stuff.

It's been a very long term project that will hopefully be done sometime next year. More info here: https://www.advrider.com/f/threads/ducati-telaio-rigido.1516940/

Rims...a question about the pros & cons...

They will work fine with disk brakes. The rim has no idea if it's a disc or drum, it only knows there aren't brake pads pressing in it. As in, the sides of the rim aren't intended to have brake pads rubbing on them. Otherwise, it's all good.
