    1956 Schwinn Racer

...or maybe I just didn't take them at all? I guess I didn't take many when I couldn't upload them anyway. I was missing one of the brake cable fittings, so I improvised. I'd show the after shot but I never took one. You'll just have to wait until I install it. For now imagine something...

    1956 Schwinn Racer

Ok, so I think I got the computer issues worked out. And guess what? It was something on the host's end, not mine. There went a few hours wasted on trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. Anywhos, where was I? I (sort of) banged out the dents in the rear fender in prep for getting the...

    Build-Off "Parts Needed"

I can hear the motorcycles on Huron River Drive on nice days. It's a common route for test rides when I get a bike done. (Motorcycle that is). When we first got here we planned on staying two or three years. That was 23 years ago!

It is all meant in fun! But yeah, I suppose it might hit close to home for some people. But I really have been thinking about looking for another Mustang. I'm posting this on the new computer, transfering the files went amazingly smooth. I haven't worked out the web hosting yet though. I may...

    Build-Off "Parts Needed"

That'd be cool, thanks! I'm at 48130 in Michigan if it makes a difference. Canada is just across the river from here after all. ;-)

    1956 Schwinn Racer

TL:dr version - I'm making progress but no updates until tech issues are worked out. Alright, so this little guy hasn't sat untouched these past few days. I've been doing some small stuff to it and today new tires and brake pads showed up. Woo hoo! One problem is... the half price chain I...

    Build-Off "Parts Needed"

I'm struggling to find a suitable seat for my '56 Racer, I was going to order a Brooks B66 copy off of alibaba, but I just can't get over the feeling it will be a POS that I'm not at all happy with. So what I'm trying to find is something along the lines of this. I'd buy new if i could find...

    Schwinn Exercise Bike

Schwinn Exercisers - many a young boy's introduction to the concept of fixed gears. A common occurance in the shop. Kid comes in with parent(s). Parent(s) let's the kid wander off and do whatever because, you know, the bike shop staff will babysit for a while. Kid hops on an exercisor. Slips...

    One-Eyed Sailor's Fleet!

Those look like pedals off of an exercise bike. The weight on the bottom kept them oriented correctly but they're missing the big strap that went over your foot. Check out Schwinn Exercisor pedals from the late '70s early '80s? EDIT: https://www.ebay.com/itm/125451593679?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28

    1956 Schwinn Racer

With the generous help of sdframe who sourced some spokes and a headset washer for me, I was able to make more progress on the Racer today. The tires are just rim protectors, they're both further gone than I thought so I'll be ordering new ones. I'm not sure what's going on around here...

    1956 Schwinn Racer

I laced up the front wheel today. Here's a shot from a reality check I did to see how I was doing getting it dished correctly. The clean up on the rim turned out better than I was expecting, it will fit in fine with the look of the rest of the bike. Of course it will also start to flash rust the...

    1956 Schwinn Racer

I've got everything here to polish them, but with the condition of the paint on the frame I don't want to. I also don't want to get flakes of chrome in my buffer wheels (buffs?) but that's beside the point. I think the beat up look will go better with the dull spokes and abused paint. In fact I...

    1956 Schwinn Racer

I got one of the rims cleaned up. It looks ok here But this shot shows a more realistic condition The cleaned rim is the same one as shown above.

    1956 Schwinn Racer

I started working on the front wheel today. This is not a rim I would normally use, but staying with the "if it functions it stays" mantra, I'll give it a go. There isn't going to be much "chrome" left in some sections once it cleaned up I'm afraid. An aside - I hear people talk about cleaning...

    1956 Schwinn Racer

The front brake was pretty messed up, with a bent pivot and a missing nut. I straightened it out the best I could and stole the acorn nut off the back brake since it will be less visible(?). This is still missing the thin washer/shim under the adjusting nut but that's the life of a 66 year old...

    Gas Money

I used to work in the exhaust industry. Back in the day there were dual wall exhaust pipes with space between the walls. Common on old Hondas and stuff but not too common on cars. The problem is how do you bend two pipes at the same time without the inner one contacting the outer? One way was...

    1956 Schwinn Racer

^^From my first post in this thread^^ Well, it worked out. I bought the frame/fork on ebay, it was local so I picked it up in person. When I was there I asked about some other parts for it and came home with the frame, fork, chain guard, and fenders. FINNED front fender I might point out. I...

    1956 Schwinn Racer

There are areas of touch up paint on the frame that might look even worse if the paint were cleaned up much more. The difference in color isn't as obvious when everything is generally dingy. :giggle: I put one of the pedals back together after clean up. I did them one at a time to see what...
