BO15 DURALIUS - 1936 Wards Hawthorne- Done. BOTH Of Them!

Thanks man! I’ve had a copper and cream theme in mind for years, but it was more paint based. This all came to me because I picked up the ladies frame cheap. I had been riding mine in a BMX/street fighter style for a few years and was ready to do something cool and matchy with both of them. Then...

    DURALIUS- 1936 Wards Hawthorne

Much appreciated! That’s exactly what I was going for. Kind of an elevated rat rod!

    DURALIUS- 1936 Wards Hawthorne

I just want to thank everyone for all the compliments and likes the last couple days. Means a lot to this guy. Especially since I'm mostly just a lurker the other 8 months out of the year. It seems like this might be a record number of finished bikes, too. Awesome! I'm glad this little niche of...

    DURALIUS- 1936 Wards Hawthorne

That’s a huge compliment coming from one of the veterans of the board! Thank you

BO15 DURALIUS - 1936 Wards Hawthorne- Done. BOTH Of Them!

Thanks man, dig yours too! Lots of cool ones and it feels like more finished bikes than most years.

BO15 DURALIUS - 1936 Wards Hawthorne- Done. BOTH Of Them!

Thank you! It’s always nice to get compliments from the veterans of this site. You’ve seen it all! It’s funny, I always find frames relatively cheap and search high and low for some of the original parts. So then when it’s done, it looks like I took a perfectly good complete bike and “ruined”...

BO15 DURALIUS - 1936 Wards Hawthorne- Done. BOTH Of Them!

Thank you! The half-link chains are readily available on most of the BMX sites. I needed three to do two bikes. Nothing else that I could find had a decent copper color. And I looked for a long time!

BO15 PINK PANTHER - Close, but no cigar.

Sorry to hear it. I missed my first build off due to a crashed computer, and I made this one by about 40 minutes, so I haven’t really learned anything. Cool bike, been wanting to do some sort of low rider chopper for a while.

BO15 DURALIUS - 1936 Wards Hawthorne- Done. BOTH Of Them!

Thanks man. I’d been planning and collecting parts for a while, but it still ended up being a fight to the finish! I’m really happy with the results.

BO15 DURALIUS - 1936 Wards Hawthorne- Done. BOTH Of Them!

Yep, I did a his and hers! We’re only voting on the Men’s version, of course, but I wanted the wife, LBCV, to enjoy one as well. Both are 1936 Wards Hawthorne Duraliums with Silver King struts, deco stems, and accessory drilled chain guards. Hope you all enjoyed the thread and thank you for your...

That’s it. ✅ Done! I really dig the way it looks. Detail shots here. Some more final shots below.

BO15 DURALIUS - 1936 Wards Hawthorne- Done. BOTH Of Them!

Last couple odds and ends and chain guard mounted. Now to get them out of the garage and down to the beach for final shots. This was happening less than two hours before deadline.

    DURALIUS- 1936 Wards Hawthorne

As I’ve mentioned, I was going for a part deco, part euro, part board track, and all rat rod creation. There is no paint on the bikes except some copper to cover the red stripe on the hub! Polished aluminum, polished steel, fresh copper! Both bikes were cobbled together from 9 different...

    DURALIUS- 1936 Wards Hawthorne

That’s right, there’s two! I made a bunch of hints along the way but nobody caught on. Just to be clear, this is not two entries, only the men’s bike is up for the vote. The Ladies bike is simply a prop or doodad! Detail shots in the next post. Thank you for looking! Build thread here...

BO15 DURALIUS - 1936 Wards Hawthorne- Done. BOTH Of Them!

Before and stripping of the chain guard. The one I’m using actually looked worse than the other one. This is the only big job left, followed by about 10 odds and ends, a final polish, and finding a place to shoot. Then I have to get it all unloaded by 7, my time! I know your main photo is locked...

BO15 DURALIUS - 1936 Wards Hawthorne- Done. BOTH Of Them!

Blew apart the pedals I’m using. Polished them up as much as possible and used new stainless and copper hardware.

BO15 DURALIUS - 1936 Wards Hawthorne- Done. BOTH Of Them!

Back to the Brooks seat. After I cut out the front spring I used an old fender bracket but it just didn’t look right. I brought the seat to my buddy Dave at Engle Bro’s Fabrication and he made quick work of the situation. Welded the two main parts together and welded a mounting bolt in place as...

    BO15 SteamRoller - Finished 1st THANKS!! - CompareTwinWinsVerBotenSteamRoller

Man, you had a busy weekend! The bike and photos look awesome. I’m suddenly feeling extremely behind! It’s going to be a long couple of days.

BO15 DURALIUS - 1936 Wards Hawthorne- Done. BOTH Of Them!

Modern chain, in copper. The KMC “copper” ones are a weird bronze color, so modern chain it is. Wire wheeled the adjusters and made 1936 penny washers for them. Chain installed. Adjusters installed. There is a very long way to go in the next 48 hours. I feel like I’m doing everything twice!

BO15 DURALIUS - 1936 Wards Hawthorne- Done. BOTH Of Them!

Got the tires mounted on the wheels. Got the wheels straight enough to not rub, got the silver king struts polished up and mounted up. Few more details to get back to but feeling pretty good about it.
