Doodad? Maybe my only one. What you’re looking at is the backside of the RRB license plate, and a custom little bracket I made to mount it in an existing hole in the fender. The primed side just got some fading with scotch brite. Trying to find the time to go get some proper final shots and...

Thanks! I think the black base and the light sprays of black and red oxide while the texture is wet really help. The matte clear makes it all a bit darker and a lot stronger, too. Your Patina is looking good, too!

Thanks! It’s the first time I’ve done an entire bike like this. I really like how it’s coming together!

I do most of my mocking up one part at a time, so it really is fun to see it all come together. And to be fair, I’m working with a lot of parts that either are known to work together or I’ve used on my other bikes in the past. But this was a whirlwind. 75% of the work was done in a week!

Finally some assembly. It was a lot longer, lot slower process than with chrome and powdercoated parts. The paint will come off a lot easier. I taped some parts off and used the wire wheel on the grinder to make things fit better. All the OG Schwinn bearings and races were polished and greased...

Once I got all the parts caught up in the patina department, I hung everything back up for the final time for a few coats of matte clear. I wasn’t sure how all the different paint was going to react but the clear went on with zero incident. While the clear was drying I started putting together...

Here’s the round up of all the “rust” parts. By the bottom they have a couple coats of matte clear on them to try and keep the texture from flaking off. Makes it a little darker, too. My $20 red stripe hub. Again, nice but run of the mill stuff. Even though I painted a lot of parts “body”...

Right up my alley! Got my vote.

It’s all part of the quest to make something extraordinary out of run of the mill stuff. One 80s cruiser, some 100th anniversary parts, a few new parts from a fellow RRB member, and some rattle cans. That’s really about it!

I actually sprayed everything flat black first. Then the texture, then random sprays with the black and red oxide and more texture while it was wet. More on that coming soon!

So here we go! I haven’t done a full fauxtina bike before although I’ve studied it a lot. But I’m pretty much winging it a this point. I wish I had a top secret formula, but really the only secret is patience. I did wait a full day in between the red oxide, flat black and matte white layers...

I got sort of sidetracked with the holiday being in the middle of two weekends. We definitely found some activities to fill our time. The wife and I did or normal Cuclone Coasters monthly ride. But this month’s theme was the Shelby invasion. Some of these guys have unrestored bikes approaching...

So here’s some of the parts after three coats of different paint. As you can see, I masked off a couple areas to give the finished product some detail. And some of the parts that are getting the “rust” treatment were sprayed in black first. Those are brand new stingray style pedals that I took...

Here’s the tools of the trade. As with the theme of lower priced, easy obtainable parts, all of my paint is off the shelf. Home Depot’s shelf to be exact. The body color parts are red oxide primer, industrial flat black, heritage white matte, and matte clear. The parts are flat black, autumn...

So I’ve never been in the position where I was done early in a build off. In fact, I built a ‘55 Schwinn Racer my first time out, maybe BO 8 or 9, and my computer crashed while I was uploading my final photos and I missed the deadline by about 20 minutes. Now I’m not sure how to roll out the...

So my event was this past Saturday and after a few long days of nothing but bike building, I finished the bike at 6am and got three hours sleep before riding the bike 10 miles without even so much as a test ride. I’m not sure how I want to roll out the rest of the build process. For now here are...

Both of these sold already. Both to friends in Long Beach who had their bikes stolen. It’s an epidemic here.

It’s a weird little triangle area on the side of my house. Only been here a year, but eventually a shed and gravel will be here specifically for wood cutting/sanding/ part painting, etc. with no cleanup.
