Cool find! The frame will have a serial number on the rear dropout. the first number is the year. The frame paint looks awesome, it will be fun for you bringing that one back! Also, I bet the tires are original, and they had red lines on them, that are now white because of age and weather.

This picture should help. The large barrel washer mounts in the front. I think you knew that because that side is threaded. On the back there is a brake ferrule similar to the ones by a brake caliper. It has a shape I haven't seen for brake calipers though, but I think a normal ferrule should...

I would leave it on there, I think it looks cool and shows they are NOS! And most likely you'll mess them up with chemicals, it is old rubber and they weren't the best tires even new :D

On the sprocket, I think black, either flat or gloss. I like the color matched idea also, but think they look tougher in black.

Yes, the color looks like my Huffy made JC Penney Swinger. It has a flaming stack and is a 3-Speed. It also uses the Persons springer banana seat. Mine is a project though, it didn't have to original parts when I found it. Let me see if I can find a picture of the ad for the bike.
