Just another 26" Schwinn Cruiser Build

Yeah, definately has the heavy duty vibe! I haven't made my mind up if we are putting decals on it or leaving plain Jane! Thoughts are welcome!

Okay, I think we got a finished product except changing out the bars eventually, they are definitely not comfortable bars! I'll need to get the S&M bars I posted earlier chromed. Using a really nice Sakae(SR) stem, puts the bars up and out a bit, Schwinn headset, Schwinn bottom bracket with...

So this is where it's at now, but I'm going to be changing a few things. The red brake cable is changing to black, the red I had in my parts, but decided I don't like it, so changing to black. As you can see I ran the brake cable in the top tube, I drilled and filed slots prior to powder coat...

First problem- dropouts are welded at different heights from factory, front tire leans to one side, didn't notice during disassembly, must have been tilted and tightened to compensate for difference in height. Took some filing, but we fixed it.

    Questions from newbie...wheels and tank?

Also here, basic coaster brake wheelset is $89.00, he uses Alienation PBR rims, and only blackstainless, or standard stainless spokes. Chrome rims are an extra $10.00. You can customize and the cost goes up. Great customer service too! http://bicyclewheelwarehouse.com/Cruising/Cruising-26/

Almost forgot my cool hook up today. I sent an email to S&M bikes regarding their Husky 4 Speed MX bars, asking if they would make me a set without the BMX crossbar. The sales guy, ARNOLD, right away responded, he has these cruiser bars they made sitting in the shop, almost identical specs as...

Made a new brake bridge out thick wall chromoly, and yes, the factory one is that crooked. My idea is to get the brake bridge as close as possible to the tire when it's in it's forward location in the drop outs. Reason being is my son is now saying let's do a freewheel! I mocked up a set of Dia...

Yes, plenty of room with room to spare! These frames have wide seat/chain stays for sure.

Yup, probably trying to put a standard decimal tire on a fractional Schwinn rim. It won't work no matter how much soap and water you use! Lol

Weinmann 810 adjustment on a '67 Schwinn Collegiate

Also, lightly scuff the brake pad with some sandpaper, breaks the gloss and sids in stopping.

Weinmann 810 adjustment on a '67 Schwinn Collegiate

I've done a few sets of old caliper brakes and have got great results. I did my daughters 1975 Breeze, and two Cruisers. First, use a new modern brake cable, the best is the oddessey slick cable, huge advancements in cable technology, then switch to modern brake pads, I've used both Kool Stop...

Bead blasted frame and started cleaning it up. I noticed on the rear drops there was one with a nice radiused edge, and the other had a sharp edge, which told me they used one stamping and then flopped the drop out to the other side, I've never seen this on CHICAGO dropouts, I think CHICAGO...

Started on frame, removed chain guard tabs, fender support under kickstand tube, again used silicone bronze rod on my rig welder to fill in blemishes. Found a fair amount of factory voids in the tubing.

This bike has standard 26" rims, I believe ISO 459 sizing. The late 70' Schwinn Spitfire and the later Schwinn cruiser used S2 rims, which are standard sizing. You are probably referring to some of Schwinns oddball rims, S7, S6, S5's, which take fractional tires, like 26 x 1 3/4, versus standard...

Started cleaning parts and rebuilding the wheels. Showed my son how, actually he took apart the whole bike, how to clean bearings etc, clean chrome parts in Oxalic acid (wood bleach). Wheels were disassembled for coaster brake and bearing rebuild also.
