    Information on running wide tires

I'm trying to find out any information you guys have about running wide tires - 3" ones, as an example, and what problems you run into doing that or what issues you have to deal with. It appears most everyone runs a 24" wide tire in the back and maybe a similar one in the front - or a smaller...

Roaring coaster rear end - success at last

My bad. Sorry October, my last reply was to you.

    First mock-up of my "rad-tracker"..

Re: First mock-up of my boardtracker.. Mark, thanks for the additional pictures. I didn't notice on Gerwin's original picture that there was a bolt that ran through the spring and went up higher than the spring. It looked like the spring was fixed on each end - which is why I wasn't sure how...

Roaring coaster rear end - success at last

Hugo, sorry about that but I didn't think to take additional pictures as I was trying things. I would do something, put it back together, spin it and see if it was quite, and if not, then pull it back apart and try something else. I wasn't sure if it was the brake shoes rubbing on the grooves...

    First mock-up of my "rad-tracker"..

Re: First mock-up of my boardtracker.. Gerwin, that springer on the bike is really unusual. I'm still trying to figure out exactly how it works. My assumption is that there is no bolt running through the spring and it is just the spring attached to the fork arms at both ends. So as the...

    Violet 65 Varsity

Steve, the bike looks pretty good as a rat. And the purple looks good. Now pink on guys - that was a different story. Niagara Cycle sells some 26 x 2.125 Pyramid Pro (Kenda) cruiser tires (K130) fairly cheap (under $7 each) and they are narrow compared to the Cheng Shins of that same...

Roaring coaster rear end - success at last

I played around with that piece out of the rear hub again today and finally got it quiet. I figured out that the piece moves left and right in the hub when you either pedal or brake. So as you were braking it was moving towards the outside of the hub and right before it began to brake those...

Roaring coaster rear end - success at last

Re: Roaring coaster rear end I played around with it a little more today. I sanded on the groves on that part to make them slightly smoother and then put it back together and tested it again. It seems like when you back pedal - as if to brake - that pushes the groved part higher in the hub...

Roaring coaster rear end - success at last

Re: Roaring coaster rear end Maxxx, just to let you know, I had the same thought. I tried tightening the hub some - and then loosening it some - and it still made the same noise. When you are pedaling it's fine, and when you push back on the pedals to brake it's fine. The only time it makes...

    Need a good laugh?

Yes, that is sad. The bikes could be put to good use instead of ending up as scrap metal. Sometimes the laws make no sense. It's one thing to keep you from reselling cars or car parts, but including bikes in that same law is a bit much. I guess you could use Paul's approach and tell them you...

Need Sturmey Archer 3 speed HELP

I'm not the expert but I can pass along some things I learned when installing the one I have. On mine, if the cable is not hooked up at all, the rear end is in high gear. So it will ride that way - but is tough to pedal. As you pull the chain out, that shifts the rear end into mid range and...

Update on the stretch bikes - video added 12/17/07

Kingpin, the only set of fat blackwalls I have are currently mounted on the Del Sol I got from Steve. I kind of like the whitewalls on this one since they break up all of the black on it. I have another set of rusty rims that I plan to paint red and once I get those done I will stick them on...

Update on the stretch bikes - video added 12/17/07

Over the weekend I swapped a few parts around on some of the bikes. I put the 3 speed wheels and tires on the blue stretch bike and took the single speed wheels and wide whitewalls that were on it and put them on the Remix bike. I also installed the chainguard and my favorite front sprocket on...

    Opening swedish bottom bracket

Hugo, hopefully someone will have some experience with these and be able to tell you for sure, but it does look similar to a US one piece crank - which is reverse threaded. The US ones usually have a nut and washer on the outside and a piece like yours behind the nut and washer. That inside...

Roaring coaster rear end - success at last

Re: Roaring coaster rear end TD, thanks for the input. The wheel / rear hub is on an $80 bike that I bought used for $40, so I obviously don't want to spend a lot fixing it. I may try sanding that part down a bit - as if it wore some from use - and see if that helps. If not, I guess I will...

Update on the stretch bikes - video added 12/17/07

Rickster, which bike were you asking about? The red and white cruiser one that got stretched and then painted a pewter color afterwards? Or the blue and gold / tan cruiser that I took a photo of behind the red bike? If you mean that one, it was a Pacific Kulana cruiser that came with tons...

Update on the stretch bikes - video added 12/17/07

I think this one took a week or more to build. Lots of gathering the right sized pipe, laying things out, doing things, redoing things, etc. Not nearly as simple as taking an existing bike and changing it up. I am going to check it out later this week and see for myself how it rides.

Roaring coaster rear end - success at last

Re: Roaring coaster rear end Thanks, WT. If anyone else has seen this issue let me know how you resolved it. I'm also thinking about maybe slightly sanding down the lower ridges on that piece to see if it will at least lessen the noise. It it's a little bit smoother maybe that will help...

Update on the stretch bikes - video added 12/17/07

Re: Update on the stretch bikes Korporal, your chopper bike looks good and does look similar - at least the bottom bracket being out front. Okay, Kingpin, here's a video of "Uncle Stretch" taking a ride on "Cheeto" - the extended stretch bike.

Roaring coaster rear end - success at last

I bought a cheap single speed bike a couple of months ago and I noticed that when you are riding it and stop pedaling and let it freewheel, it makes a fairly loud roaring noise. It doesn't make noise when you are pedaling or when you are braking - just freewheeling. I pulled the coaster brake...
