I find and recover stolen bikes in my town a few times a year, the problem is, 9 times out of 10 the person I recover it from was not the thief and knows no history on the bike, they just “acquired” it.
Here where I live, over half the bikes you see riding around are sprayed black, frame, bars, grips, tires, chain, chrome, everything, because they’re stolen.
I’ve grown to hate it.
I was cleaning the shop and touched the wire wheel to the fork and the paint just about jumped off, so I stripped it and painted it to match the frame.
Now that the frame is all welded up, I sanded it, wiped with acetone, primered, and painted. Wanted a “vintage” color so I went with hunter green. Not sure yet if I’ll paint the fork the same or go black. Just waiting for paint to dry now.
The rear tire would not turn so I cut out the fender brackets and cut off the drop outs. Made my own cross braces from some tube and cut the drop outs off a BMX bike to replace the drops.
