I got some big tires on the Firebolt, but it did take some working over. The screws I used for the fender braces got filed down flat inside. I also had to shorten the chain with a half-link to get the rear wheel centered fore-aft in the fender.

Mountain bike scene has been obsessed with this sort of stuff for a while. The long and the short of it is you'll be fine. Under heavy load or riding aggressively you might get a bit of lateral tire roll, but I can't imagine the bead coming unseated. I've run folding 2.35 Kevlar bead tires set...

You can attack the problem from the other side...clipless pedals and work on cadence. Do you ever do "training rides" on the drifter? You could also look at a hand-cycle conversion?

Old and new for Miss Firebolt. Late 70's ? Shimano 3 speed thumb shifter and NOS Shimano cable. I always think new drivetrain parts are beautiful.
