@GuitarlCarl I have two built steel 3-speed wheels and one spare shimano hub and they are all 28 spoke. I broke down and ordered the 3-speed coaster brake hub and a built black anodized 36 spoke wheel that I can lace the hub into. It seems like half the bike is in the mail right now and our...

If you can find the paint it in something other than rattle can there's always airbrushes. The Badger Air Gun is cheap, runs on replaceable propellant canisters, can be purchased at most hobby stores and will handle small areas easily. I wouldn't want to paint a whole frame with it but for...

The fancy tools for testing tension of the spokes basically squeeze adjacent spokes together and read out a number. Your fingers are probably precise enough, just compare tension to a similar known good wheel. When I build a wheel I get all the spokes finger tight by twisting each nipple about a...

I spent the afternoon yesterday measuring up for brakes and sorting out my options, finding something to fit will be a real problem. @OddJob buddy of mine has a 4-speed coaster hub, but there's no shifter of any sort and I just got a shiny NOS Shimano 3-speed click stick shift in the mail...

I broke down and bought a 16" wheel from my LBS, It is apparently a BMX race wheel that has been lying around forever so I got a deal on it. One of the reasons the seat has looked so off is that I couldn't get a seat post to fit in the seat tube. I measured everything and realized the seat post...

Trying a few more things. I picked up some more gear from my buddy Matt. Here we are with the new bars and big and little rubber on 20's which is the way I was thinking of going. Here's with the shortest wheel I could dig up on short notice, an 18" off my grandson's Lightning McQueen bike...

Have you considered lacing one of the 3-speed hubs from the wheels you have into one of the rims that fit the tires? It's actually a lot easier than it sounds and about the only specialty tool you absolutely need is a spoke wrench. You would probably be able to re-use the spokes from the rim...

Hi everyone, This is my first build off. I'm starting with a pile of parts I got from a buddy of mine who is a fan of the site but i don't think has an account on here. (If you're lurking and reading this Matt, thanks!) The bike is a Leader Marquis manufactured by Victoria Precision Works...

    Possibly a 1959 JC Higgins?

The serial number is MO R228 164755 I'm going to create another thread in the builds sectoin to cover the tear down.

    Possibly a 1959 JC Higgins?

It's already a rider, so I think I'll just tear it down, grease it up and ride it for a while. I'm sort of curious about the two-speed hub, I want to see how that handles. Maybe I'll try my hand at some pin striping.

    Possibly a 1959 JC Higgins?

It has a Bendix red band hub, which if original puts it in the early sixties at the oldest.

    Possibly a 1959 JC Higgins?

I just picked this up. The owner said it's a 1959 JC Higgins but I'm not so sure. I'll post serials a little later. It's remarkably clean for a bike it's ostensible age.

As promised, here are some better pics. The before picture: The after picture: I'm thinking I like it better with the rear fender, any opinions? The rims and rear hub are original to the bike but I tore everything down and rebuilt them with fresh spokes. I had tried polishing the rims only...

    1948 Columbia Goodyear Marathon

It's alive! I finally got it all together and took it for a test spin tonight. There's still a little to do but it rides! I'm guessing it's the first time it's been ridden in 30 or more years. Here's a picture, better pics when there's more light.

Upgrade the bulbs to LED. They are now selling direct replacement LED bulbs that are brighter and draw less current than conventional bulbs; your batteries will last a lot longer. I Googled "replacement LED flashlight bulb" and found all kinds. They are discusses at length on here too.

What are two things you never have enough of when doing builds?

I'm just getting started in the hobby so just about everything. I finally managed to get one bike rolling with just tires, tubes, seat and a bottom bracket kit which isn't bad for a 70 year old bike. Bottom line is I have to agree with Carl, cash and just about everything it can buy.
