    Plum Crazy

Finally found the (good) Hella 500. It's just kind of jammed in there, but you get the idea.

    Plum Crazy

Started on the rear fairing. I need to extend the front of it so that it reaches the seat. It's ABS, so it's a weldable thermoplastic and that's what I'll be doing with some ABS sheet I have. The pictured parts are just some reinforcements as I don't trust just a stitch weld. The holes are...

    Huffy The Mag

I love unusual shifters. Looking forward to seeing how those are done.

    Monark Sparker

Interesting shift! The only ones I remember seeing were Autobikes at a low end sporting goods place that used weights on the spokes to move a rear derailleur. This seems like a much better idea.

More or less got what I wanted done. I think the truss rods came out pretty slick, in particular. You can see the fairing I'll be using and I modified the green Columbia Fire Bolt tank from the Cyclops to fit the angle of the head tube. I was expecting that to be kind of a pain, but it was...

    Plum Crazy

I have no idea, but I converted it to a solid axle and I hope that and maybe a little mechanical sympathy is enough. I bought a 90mm drum brake for the front as I also plan on reinforcing the fork using the old cantilever mounts as truss rod supports because I figure it can't hurt. Playing with...

Electric info: this will be 52V motor with a step-down voltage converter for the 12V for the lighting as shown in the diagram. I come from an extensive knowledge of internal combustion engines, so learning electric was a little confusing at first as I tried to think of the components as being...

I intended to start this earlier, but decided to wait for the BO so more people could see the electric stuff. I am not an electrician, but hopefully, it will be a help. Anyway, this has been leaning here for months waiting (those trees out the window have leaves now!). It's a 1995 Giant Innova...

Rant: why I have trouble supporting the LBS

The only LBS left that's useful to me isn't so L, but the guy knows and loves old stuff. Helped me get the fork for my 1912 IJ repaired and was even willing to track down a replacement if it didn't work. The rest of them sell a very limited selection of standard stuff I don't need for newer...

As Mike Tyson said: everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth. That's how builds are for me. I do plan on reusing some parts I made and abandoned on Interrobang, which was a previous punch in the mouth.

Oh, yeah, and he also bought a bunch of the "Death of Superman" comic to preserve, like a few million others. At least these investments didn't cost him much.

I remember the vote for which Elvis stamp. My friend actually wanted old Elvis because he thought it was funny, but he bought a bunch of sheets of the stamps to save just the same. It's great to have been able to leave behind such beloved and far reaching artwork.

For reference, the cells for my 52V 35aH battery cost about $150 from batteryhookup. Of course, that's a lot of battery, but I also want to run no more than 80% charge and keep the discharge rate low for the sake of lifespan. Plus the shipping cost was the same for a lesser number of cells.

Probably going with Plum Crazy after a book I might finish after I get the Sloth & Good Boy books out and you can probably guess the color it'll be (I know Plymouth called it "In Violet", but the Dodge's color name is much better and better known).

If anyone is looking to build a battery, check out batteryhookup.com. I got the flat cells with individual BMSs for really cheap. Got enough to build a second battery for the e-kayak, too. Shipping overseas might be a killer, but maybe there's something similar in the EU.

Who has made a 1 1/8” steer tube fork work in a 1” head tube?

I can't remember which brand I used on a Spaceliner, but it was a 32.5mm head tube ID like the Retro Ryder unit. Any smaller head tube ID than that and I don't think there's anything out there that works (though I imagine if someone could machine a headset with a fully external bearing race or...

    PPE for bike building

Junk clothes for anything that will impart bad smells or involves grease, oil, etc. and old shoes for putting holes in the beaver dams. I have an Israeli military gas mask with NBC filters for painting. Grinding, sanding, whatever, I wear lab goggles (which I only started doing after I got a...

    ... From My Front Door

I'm in the suburbs north of Boston and we get coyotes that do the rounds through the yard and surrounding property every few months. I have a couple of recordings of them celebrating kills or communicating hunts or something (one sounded like they were attacking Canada geese in the pond . . ...

I second that there are things to appreciate in more than one bike. I'm not competitive at all, I do build-offs because it pushes me to actually finish something and maybe people can learn from some of my odd ideas (as poorly documented as they tend to be since I forget to take photos when I get...
