~?What Else Do You Collect ?~

I don't collect things any more, but I used to. Somewhere, I have a box with maybe a hundred or more overpriced HO scale cars and trucks and some buildings to go with them. When I was a kid, it always bothered me about Hot Wheels and Matchbox that the vehicles weren't in exact scale to each...

    Selling/Trading During the Pandemic

The decrease in death rate is being attributed to better knowledge on treatment with increased knowledge of how the disease works and the rate increase being more with younger people who are generally more resilient. One of the things I do is write. What I'm working on now is a series of short...

In praise of the Dia Compe noodle

That one's fancier! I bought a 10 pack of plain metal and I'm sure there are all kinds of creative uses for them (I might even end up using one for the throttle setup of the electric kayak project I'm working on very slowly).

In praise of the Dia Compe noodle

Is that the flexible one? I used a flexible one on Retro Rocket and I don't know how I would have gotten the front brake to work without it.

    Covid Bike Boom Cooling Off?

I agree that a lot of new riders will keep with it, but enough won't that the used market should be plentiful next year—[Darth Vader voice] never underestimate the power of being sedentary.[/Darth Vader voice] Or just going back to whatever they used to do before.

'90s GT Arette - Some upgrades.

I know what you mean about low gearing. I had to change out USAAF's ancient 7-speed freehub that wasn't rebuildable and could only get an 8. Noticed the newer gearing options and decided to go with a wall climber lower gear (42T) for the additional ratio (friction shift, so no problems with...

    Your happy place

There's so much to see, especially factoring in all the islands so IMO, prioritize what you want to see or do and don't expect to see everything in one trip so you can really enjoy it. I'm a history person, so that was my priority and I was surprised that one of the best things I saw was...

    Price check on aisle Nishiki...

Minus the more elaborate integrated rear brake noodle, it looks a lot like an early '90's Giant chromoly frame, but the search spider on the internet web tells me Giant made frames only went from 1980-86. Either way, I find those Giants to be great all-rounders and very adaptable, and I imagine...

    Old lights: conversion to LED???

That might be the same headlight my USAAF bike has, though I thought it was lower wattage. But, it also makes sense that it would be higher than 3/5W as it's much too bright for that. Could have been a victim of translation, but anyway, it's a good light for a bicycle. It's not even that heavy...

    Old lights: conversion to LED???

This is old—the USAAF bike (middle) has yellow film over it now. There is no flash or extra light in this room, it was taken at night and entirely lit by the bikes with the cheapest ~2015 iphone and its tiny light sensor. Keep in mind that I am not an electrician, so this is what I've...

    Old lights: conversion to LED???

I have a beehive truck clearance light as a tail light on Interrobang and a round trailer tail light on the USAAF bike. With the latter, I wired it up to run at brake light brightness. It is effective.

    Your happy place

As a kid, I used to go out to the skeletal lighthouse on Marblehead neck on my bike. Luckily today, especially with the pandemic, it's our property surrounded by ponds and woods. Old phone takes lousy, dark photos.

    Old lights: conversion to LED???

This is a good point about optics. Even with LEDs, you're going to be looking at needing a good amount of power for a good "seeing" light while "being seen" lights are easy and you can run them all day on low power. For seeing lights, I'd recommend higher voltages and light units designed as...

    Bike Trailers?

I've built carts to tow a kayak. This is 2.0 from about 7 years ago. Currently on 3.0, which is stronger, stays located better, and collapses into smaller pieces for better storage inside the boat (necessary as I'm electrifying this particular boat, so I'm losing some storage capacity and adding...

    Brooks Saddle

It's a B72, which it seems like they stopped making (at least for the time being). I don't see replacement frames on their website anymore, so that might help if there's someone out there looking for a frame that has a nice top, but I can't imagine that's a large demand and you can't get...

    Old lights: conversion to LED???

There are a lot of LED bulbs being made now that are plug-and-play replacements of legacy bulb types. It should say what the type is on the bulb (if you have it). If you don't or it's illegible, you'll have to do some searching to find its type. If it's a screw base, that should be an E type and...

RAT / ROD MODEL KIT BASH CHALLENGE

So, that's what happened! Thought I would see if my nephew would be interested in model making, but the prices were absurd—more than a lot of lower end ready-made die cast prices and that's before adding paints, thinner, brushes, etc. I started landscaping when I was 13 and a decent chunk went...
