    Bones Bomber

After a two week trip to Australia and Asia, I finally found some time to get her assembled. I'm still missing a couple parts - like the chain and the saddle - but she's finally a roller. I went for the BMX cranks, with 28t up front and 13t in back. Combined with the Sturmey-Archer 2-speed...

2015 FELT RED WOLFE CRUISER - FULL REVIEW

I think it's a great looking Felt. I need to get my hands on one of those frames at some point...

    Jayne - 1954 Schwinn Hornet

I'm pretty sure the older paints were an alkyd enamel, and baked on - which would explain why they are so hard to take off.

Well, the paint is done, clear coat is dry, and it's ready for assembly. Pretty happy with how it turned out. Well, Fruttolo, I'm still going back and forth on the front brake. I was originally thinking of a disc front, and have an Avid mechanical brake sitting in a box, but I wanted a...

What if, instead of skate wheels, Rat Bones were forks? That's what I went with on the forks. I was luck enough to find some good images online, that I could make stencils from. I swear, the little Silhouette Cameo software is amazing at this stuff. It took me maybe 5 minutes to take the...

IMO, the key to a good, durable paint job is a quality clear coat and a good primer. The epoxy is nasty, and expensive, but it holds paint and it holds the surface. I will sometimes use an etching primer first, but If I have the time, I will try to lay down epoxy. Then I paint with automotive...

    Jayne - 1954 Schwinn Hornet

Believe me, I went back and forth on this for a couple years before taking the stripper to it. But here's the thing. Whatever got all over it ruined the patina, and ruined the charm of that bike. There is a reason it hadn't been ridden in decades - it wasn't cute. My mission here is to make...

    Purple Hoops

I think a nickel plated half-link chain would be sick.

I spent last night working on stencils, and this morning getting on and hitting the frame with paint. I chose Viper White to contrast the Hot Rod Black. I need to hit it with some steel wool to knock down the rough parts, but I'm pretty happy with how this turned out. When Powell Peralta...

Got home from work today after a long week, and started making stencils for tomorrow's painting efforts. Here's a preview of the head badge stencil.

    Jayne - 1954 Schwinn Hornet

Stripped and primed some bits last weekend, need to take some pics of that. In the mean time, I placed an order this morning with 66autocolor.com for the paint. I can't say enough about these guys. This is what I ordered: Items Ordered: 3 of : SprayMax 1K Base Coat Aerosol Automotive Spray...

Found a Powell Peralta font on the Interwebs. Time to make some stencils!

On the rears, yes. They are a little long, but nothing a couple layers or electrical tape can't handle. I'll send you a pic when I pull the tire off. The fronts are just too long for the Felt or a Sturmey hub. Fortunately, I had some made for The Bishop that I can re-use on this build.

The rims came from a wheelset that I bought a year or so ago - I wish I could have just bought the rims - I have a stockpile of front and rear hubs from those wheels lying around. I replaced the stock rear hub with the Sturmey kick back, and I'm still wondering what to do with the front hub. I...

Thanks, Doc. I got the paint at my local Finish Master, but my go-to Internet shop is 66 Auto Color - http://www.66autocolor.com. They carry a wide range of the Spray Max paint, and will custom mix. I love these guys.

    Bones Bomber

Busy day today - worked on Bones Bomber and Jayne. I think I was in the garage for about 10 hours! The Airplane Stripper is awesome. It took maybe a week to polish the tank originally, and maybe 10 minutes to scuff the whole frame up so it would hold paint. I shot it with etching primer first...

    Paint Stripper

Top Tip - What's the difference between these two products? The one on the left goes on quick, sprays acid, and will remove cheap rattle can paint, but is useless on quality paint. The one on the right goes on slow, with a brush, and will eat through pretty much anything - including skin. While...
