Murray Qualifier 1 & 20 (little help, please)

I've always wanted a muscle bike, but it needed to be priced well (cheap), and different (not a Stingray). This popped up on CL Sunday evening and now I'm the proud owner of a Murray(?) Qualifier 1 & 20. The only problem is, I know pretty much nothing about it. Most of the information I've found...

My sincerest thanks to everyone who cast a vote for HellCamino. It's humbling when something you build for yourself resonates with so many others. My thanks also to Steve for hosting this site and everything that comes along with it. When I first had the idea to build this bike in BO-9, I...

VOTE HERE! - OFFICIAL B.O. VOTE

Ratty is in the eye of the beholder. That's what makes this site, and this community, so great; we all have our own interpretation of what constitutes a top build. Not everyone has access to auto-CAD and plasma-cutters so you do what you can with what you've got. As for me, I'll take a "common"...

    HellCamino

Thanks Rickshaw! My Dad was always steadfast in his love for the ElCaminos too. The daul headlights are a subtle nod to most models throughout the years. My dad had two '77s and we had just sold his '86 (to fund the purchase of the second '77). Love the Sprint's too! Thanks Miss Funk! I have a...

    HellCamino

Thanks, Leghorn! I had a good time finding parts that coordinated with the build, but the crown jewel was the original paint Spitfire blue straightbar frame. I had never even seen one and when it popped up on eBay about a year ago, I thought for sure it was a 24" frame. It's the only bike I've...

Apparently third time's a charm for me to actually finish a build off, and it's been a blast. Three months sounds like such a long time to build a bike, from parts or from scratch, but it's amazing how quickly the time ticks away. If you’ve followed my original build thread you know that this...

50 Shades of Blue AKA HellCamino

Well I'm calling this one done. I've been riding around the neighborhood and all I can say is this thing is a blast. Looking forward to getting out even more once the heat subsides a bit. Last shot with it's namesake before I head to the finished section. Good luck everyone!

Don't get me wrong, I liked the apes. It's also nice to know that if I ever sell my Spitfire I can swap them out and have two different feeling bikes. There was just something about these that clicked for me, and like Frank said, I gotta do it my way. :)

It's the old HANDLEBAR SWAPEROO! :D I've been keeping this one in my back pocket which hasn't been easy with the handlebar conversation earlier in the thread. The apes don't look bad on this bike (and they made a convincing decoy), but I already have a Spitfire blue Schwinn cantilever build with...

50 Shades of Blue AKA HellCamino

A couple of more details ironed out. One of my concerns with the seatpost being so high was the extra space it created visually between the seat and the frame. Thought about adding another reflector or a taillight, but then I came across some bicycle license plates. Found a couple from 1955, but...

50 Shades of Blue AKA HellCamino

After some of the earlier discussion I decided to try out some different handlebars. These are the bars I had first decided on: Then I tired some bigger apes: Then a regular cruiser bar: Then a set of crossbrace bars: None of the alternatives looked bad, but I still think the original...

50 Shades of Blue AKA HellCamino

Here's the original post from the "how-to" section. http://www.ratrodbikes.com/forum/index.php?threads/Cheap-and-easy-shifter-mount-and-stickshift-conversion.66386/ I modified it a bit (used a threaded rod with jam nuts and some tubing--it's almost finished and will make more sense then), but...

Drivetrain is now sorted and installed. Ended up using a chainring from a Columbia I had on hand along with the original Schwinn crank. Had to flip the chainring and the sprocket on the rear wheel, and use a 1/8" spacer to get a chainline that clears the tire and fender. It's actually pretty...

50 Shades of Blue AKA HellCamino

Heading into the home stretch! I've been pretty busy with the bike so here's a few updates. But first a glimpse into my pea-brain: "Under no uncertain circumstances am I going to pinstripe the rear fender. No way. The "tool" I bought for striping was garbage. The chainguard was nearly a...
