    Hawthorne and Higgins

Couple of additions to the stable this week. First is a late 30s or early 40s Hawthorne I swapped my Schwinn Racer for to my pal Skoda. I know she's rough right now, but I see a diamond in there! The other was a CL steal! Nice J.C. Higgins ladies bike. Not sure of the year or model (is it...

    Couple of CL scores today

After many, many miles on the road this weekend I came home with a couple of new toys. The first, and best, is this early 50s Monark Holiday. Gonna clean it up for my wife. The top tube is removable (custom-made by previous owner). Pedals and Seat aren't original, and the headlight is gone...

    Rollfast w/Springer

I've never made any truss rods. The ones on my Hawthorne are original. REALLY dig your bike by the way. I drooled over it the first time I saw the posting. As the saying goes, if you ever want to sell it...I'd even double your investment!

    Rollfast w/Springer

I have the same springer on my Hawthorne Deluxe. It seems to me the only thing you're missing is the truss rods and headlight: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=9558&p=99105&hilit=hawthorne#p99105

POLL: Firestone Super Cruiser paint quandry

So here's the deal. I picked up this bike off the 'bay knowing it had been repainted. I've started trying to strip the top TWO layers of house paint whilst preserving what's left of the original paint, but it's going to be a long process and I'm not sure how well it's really going to turn out...

    1955 Hawthorne #1

As much as I enjoy being the only person I know to have one of these, I can't be greedy. There's one on the Bay right now (not mine), but it's mistakenly listed as a '52: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 2759.l1259 Go get it boys (and girls)!

    1955 Hawthorne #1

Thanks for the feedback everyone! This is definitely one of my faves in the stable. Daddyo-there is a 6-volt "lantern" style battery that fits inside the tank that powers the horn, headlight, taillight, and turn signals. I have the turn signal switch that mounts to the top tube, but not the...

    1955 Hawthorne #1

So this is the first of my pair of '55 Hawthorne's. I basically stripped them both and then built this one using the "rougher" parts. Cleaned off the dirt, but left the paint and chrome nice and patina-ed. Threw on some brown Quick Brick's and brown HW grips for a head to toe brown beauty...

    WOW that looks good!!

    Hawthorne

Sweet find! I've been working on a couple of '55s, but yours appears to be older. If you decide to part out let me know--I could use a part or two from ya!

    Early 1960s Huffy

Thanks everybody! She's definitely one of my favorites in the stable. The frame is actually completely chromed with coat of light green translucent paint (original). Some of it has rubbed off here and there, but as we all know that adds a little character.

    Early 1960s Huffy

Thanks BTF! I was pleasantly surprised at how light the frame was. I had to do some homework before I bought it, but it was worth every penny!

    Early 1960s Huffy

From 1960-1964 Huffy imported Carlton road frames from France and re-painted/badged them as Huffy's. I rescued this frame from Ebay a while back and built it up as my singlespeed/fixie (there's a flip-flop hub in back). Most of the drive train is new, but I managed to sneak in some parts I had...

    The Hawthorne Twins

HAHA! I think I'm going to make one of them as stock as as possible and rat out the other. Kind of a "golden child" and "black sheep" scenario...

It's just a harmless little hobby...newbie in Kansas City

Famous last words. I've been riding bikes for as long as I can remember. The first "big ticket" item I saved my $5/week allowance for was a $90 K-Mart special Murray bmx bike (which I have). From there I started mountain biking, then commuting, then touring...Sounds pretty healthy until I admit...

    The Hawthorne Twins

I'm the lucky guy who snapped up the '55 Hawthorne shown here a few weeks ago. Started my "holy grail" search for a correct chainguard and found another COMPLETE bike in Detroit. That would normally be a problem, but my in-laws live in the D, and after a few emails with the seller and phone call...

    FELT PARTS

So what's the verdict on getting some Felt tires? I must have a pair of brown Quick Bricks!!
