Off on another tangent.... BSA custom long lean Path Racer "The Archduke" that turns into an Art Deco Roadster!!

Hadn't thought about it but was thinking of taking it to an Art Deco weekend they have in a town called Napier that was rebuild in the Art Deco style after a earthquake...

Had a mate around today who helped me get over some design stumbling blocks I have been having issues with.... Rather than having single rods of either sides for the fender mounts I am now going to use the same jig I made for the brake stirrup and make smaller double rods that go from the axles...

Made some good progress on the front brake parts..... made the connection between the rod coming down from the lever to the stirrup... and did a mockup of the lower parts... the white bit is the arm pivoting behind the fork....

They are very cool wing nuts, got them from a eBay seller in Portrugal, I bought 6 so I might use one to tighten the seat champ and maybe the pump mount..... They match the chainwheel nicely I thought.

Smartar$e mates only comment on the bike was "the chains a bit lose...." I said it was artistic licence...... :)

I got some sealer on the rear fender and pedals, and did another full scale mock up and clean up before tackling the next project which is the front brakes.... this is pretty much how it is going to look apart from paint (gold front, dark blue rear), gold leather on the hand grips and cream...

Then I turned my attention to the rod front brake stirrup.... I welded up a jig to make the shape of the steel I wanted.... made five bends before I got 3 I was happy with... I will weld them together so they act as one.... I will have small pivot arms off the forks to stop the brake moving...

I decided the triangle pedals were to big.... (first shot) so I machined the wood and metal down to make them more in proportion..... MUCH happier with them now.

Tha Adler chainwheel arrived thanks to Richard in the Netherlands help! Then I discovered the cranks have a larger hole than the British BB's I have.... so after some thinking I have decided to use just the chainwheel and it's mount and I have got a couple of British cranks and a BB to suit...

Spent some time working on the decorations for the four ends of the fenders... this will be in three dimensions with the centre one higher and angled so getting higher at the front... still a work in progress

I decided to knock up a suitable side stand... found one I could use as a base and made this.... just got to fully weld it and fine tune the angle so that the top tube is parallel to the frame tube when up...

Tacked the handlebars together and set it all up for a new mock up.... missing Adler chainwheel, front brake stirrup and it will have cream tyres and be painted dark blue and gold... arty shot at the bottom.... the last light in the shed to be turned out... :)

Decided against any rear carrier.... to my eye it does not need it and I like the line of the seat stay and don't want to complicate that. Made some real progress on setting up the bars on the jig.... I "think" I am getting close to final fitting of rods and welding... it has some drama now...

The special tool in question is what my father used to call "a large percussive maintenance device" ie hit them with a bloody big hammer!!!! :)

And I have started building the handle bars.... made up a firm table with a numbered grid to start with as the base for the jig. And spend ages working out how they might be.... still a work in progress.... the rods WILL go to the centre line of the handle bar.... I have the bar above to see...

I also got the first coat of clear two pack wood sealer on all but the rear fender... needed to seal them so I can handle them without getting them dirty.....

Made a bunch of progress in the past few days..... the laminated oak hand grips are coming together.... first photo is the hand grip turned to size (for yellow leather lace to be wrapped around) and the inner "cap" started. Then the finished caps ready for chroming.... and the other outer end...
