57mm 3G Jemima rims on a vintage Schwinn?

Well, the rear isn't apples/apples. I used a 24x3 Berm Master on the rear, and the frame is a Columbia rather than Schwinn, so it won't really tell you what you need to know. I can tell you, FWIW, that a 3" wide tire on the 57mm rim does fill out to a full 3". It isn't wider than advertised...

57mm 3G Jemima rims on a vintage Schwinn?

FWIW, I mounted a felt 26 x 2.125" tire on a 3G 57mm wide rim and measured an overall width of 2.5". This shows the wheel in a balloon tire Schwinn fork. So keep that in mind, a 2.3" tire might fill out more depending on shape/size. I have seen some balloon tire bikes that somewhat less than...

Spoke length for 24X4 wheel and Nexus 3 speed?

You'd need to get some dimension information for both the hub and the rim, but there are online calculators that can answer your question. This is one I've used - its actually pretty straightforward, just read the tutorial: www.bikeschool.com/tools/spoke-length-calculator I also have an app...

Saying Goodbye To The Bike Hobby

In my experience, the right price point is key. Advertising something too low can be just as detrimental as listing it too high - people will assume that its junk rather than a good deal. I think its that simple in a lot of cases. I have seen things sell after raising a too-low price. But...

    Custom-built Surly Pacer

OK, here's the final reveal and all that. I took the bike to a different LBS for fitting. This shop, where I bought my LHT from, is run by an old guy that's been doing this forever. I trust his opinion when it comes to getting a rider set up properly on a bike. He also particularly liked...

    Custom-built Surly Pacer

Yes, indeed. That was one of my criteria for them. The Tiagra 8-speed shifters that I put on my Long Haul Trucker only index, there is no friction mode. I didn't discover that until I had them on. The shifters sold by Velo Orange are friction only, no indexing. They're very nice, I...

    Custom-built Surly Pacer

Thanks guys. So, I took it over to the LBS I normally visit to get a chain. I brought the bike so I could make sure they get the length right. My friend offered to put it on for me while I was there, so why not? While they had it in the back, the mechanic also adjusted cables and derailers...

is this a good stand for cruiser bikes ??

I've had difficulty with those stands. I eventually bought a Park PCS-10, which is a decent home-grade stand. I've found that I've used it enough were I'm taxing it a bit, though. For what I do, I probably need to spring for a professional-grade model.

    Custom-built Surly Pacer

Let's just say that the handlebars and bar wrap is here. And the wheels/tires are here, the shifters and derailers and cables are here. The brake levers are here, the seatpost showed up and the crankset is here too. The headset was installed, so the fork is in place. I pirated the saddle...

    Custom-built Surly Pacer

Well, that's the intent. This is the first time I'll have a road bike that actually fits me well. I want to build it exactly the way I want it to be and I'll have no need to replace it for a long time. Unless someday I want to go faster, I suppose...

    Custom-built Surly Pacer

My parts from England arrived, following what seemed like a drawn-out wait, but I guess that's to be expected: The shifters came with cables and housing (the small amount needed to get from the chainstay to the derailer). I bought Jagwire cables for the brakes, and my friend at the LBS was...

    Helmets Helmets Helmets

My personal feeling is, no, they aren't. But that also depends on which bicycle helmet you compare to. At the end of the day, while I feel strongly about the issue, I'm all for everyone being able to make their own personal choice. But if asked, I will strongly encourage my viewpoint...

    TREK buys Electra

Its interesting that most of these companies had their own lines of cruisers, or town bikes, depending on how you define them. But not necessarily the same as the traditional balloon tire beach cruiser, I suppose. I wonder how they'll be integrated together.

    Kona Hahanna-x1

Well, that's an handy characteristic. I've been finding the same thing with my Pugsley, since up to this point I'd only ridden conventional 26" bikes. With the Kona, I can still get over a lot of obstacles, but I do sometimes bash my chainring. I certainly wouldn't mind a little more...

    Kona Hahanna-x1

Nope, it must be the picture. Its probably because the front wheel is disc (so the rim is all black) and the rear rim has a machined sidewall. FWIW, the 1x1 is a 26" bike, so the fork I used is definitely 26". However, it can accommodate a very wide tire. In fact, if I ever do a "phase-III"...

    Kona Hahanna-x1

A while back I picked up an older Kona Hahanna locally for what I felt was a good price. It was steel, it was green, and it fit me. That's all I needed. It did need a little work, but it was functional. The stock RST pogo stick was blown, the cables were all rusted and the drivetrain was...

    Helmets Helmets Helmets

I use a Specialized road bike helmet when on a skinny tire bike, a Nutcase star/stripes helmet on most cruisers (as well as in the winter) and a Fox MTB helmet on the trails. I admit that I occasionally neglect to wear one if riding around the yard or in the house. But I'd never go out amongst...

    Custom-built Surly Pacer

OK, so with the paintwork done (lots of wetsanding, it needed more than I had thought initially), I put the wheels on so it actually started to look like a bike. You can see that I've put the headbadge on as well. I'm not sure if it is evident here, but I laced the rear wheel 3-cross and the...
