I just measured a Murray Westport seatpost, and it is .86 inch. That's slightly less than 7/8. Personally, I wouldn't use 6061. If I were going to machine something, I would get a piece of 7/8" 4130 tubing with a heavy enough wall to allow for a bit of reduction. Aircraft Spruce has some in that...

I've been using waterproof green grease. Can't really say if it's better, worse or indifferent compared to other greases, but it seems to work fine on my bicycles, motorcycles and outboard motors.

I think this ('72) was the first year of yellow. Before, they were red or black.

Gave $10 for this Westport, then added a spenny fork (from a Diamondback mtb) and motorized it. I call it Moby.

That's a good idea. I don't have any such pics to post at the moment, but it's something to keep in mind.
