    "The bars I have coming have a crossbar so it has to be one that separates. " If they are old bicycle crossbars with a flat section at the ends, just take the bolt out of the gooseneck and thread the bars past that part.

    Double O, 00, and/or "corn head grease" work well, and are a lot more free flowing than standard grease and don't leak as badly as oil. the Double O used to be used in leaky oil filled automotive steering boxes. The corn head grease is easy to find in corn country and virtually unobtainable...

    Another funky front brake is the German style "Stempel Bremse" that acts on the front tire, but the action is opposite of your Phillips...
