Is it a back pedal coaster brake? Or a drum brake with a cable and brake lever?
The simplest solution to have brakes in the hub is to fit a Shimano or a Sturmey Archer 3 speed coaster hub. They're tough, easy to find, and not that expensive.
When you start getting further into it...
Yep, hit em with brake cleaner. Also sometimes the surface of the shoes can become 'glazed' (it will look a bit shiny) - you can lightly sand this off and this should give better braking power. You only need to take off a tiny bit. Plus the better leverage of a bigger brake lever can help - I...
Yep this will be a cool build! This shaped frame is a sought after late 60's early 70's Aussie icon. I hadn't thought about it before now but it looks like Speedwell were maybe using up chainstay tubes from 60's roadster stock? The last of the roadsters with bolted on chain stays were made in...
Yes, I have one of these f&s hubs too - the coaster braking is linked to the gears, so the strongest braking is in 1st gear, weakest in 3rd. I like them though :)
One day I want to upgrade my plastic shifter to one of the metal ones.
Wow! this thing is getting cooler every pic! Agree, not the right stem... I really hope you're able to stick with the chainguard, it works so well with the build... +1 for curved panel
Are they 2 different reds on the frame/fork and the mudguards? Looks like it... very cool :)
Love all the stuff in your shed man, I've never seen an oil drum chair before
ok NOW I have to make one of these. You built these to paint rims/wheels I think, but I love this idea for frames, I am always frustrated with trying to spray at different angles successfully. Has a certain egyptian look to it with that frame in the triangle...eye of horus
Just read about oilite, interesting stuff, I had no idea something like this existed or was even possible. I'd like to do something better for mine too, would brass and/or nylon also be OK? These are what I have in the shed.
Nice frame and that's a very cool stem! What brand stem is it?
Looks great with the decals. Nice gimondi cranks too, I have some in my stash for a project
Nice work - that's dedication with a camp workshop! I saw a lot of those spoke reflectors in Berlin, I'm going to try and hunt some down ... great for a commuter as you say. Nice angles on the black bike!
'63 DL-1. This needed a full strip-down re-build re-paint. Still need to do the fenders and find a missing access door for the chainguard. I kinda like it as pictured though, and I did put some decals on and then took them off again. Rod to drum brakes fore and aft give me average stopping...
