    Pitting in metal?

This may depend on your level of equipment but look into spray on body fillers. These are basically very thick primers that can be block sanded to fill pits and smooth out ripples.

    Basketcase stem/fork situation

I remember drilling a small hole in mine to help pry it out.

    Basketcase stem/fork situation

You have to remove the plug to work on the lock. It is not welded but swaged in. No lock smith should be needed. The lock is a common Yale cabinet lock. The rest of the mechanism is proprietary.

What to do with Scwinn American?

The upper part of the fork blade before the rake starts should be parallel with the head tube. Most the bend is in the steering column.

A few questions from a noob...

Yes you can use the powder coat as a base color, fill and paint over it. It is not well known but the Schwinn Phantom replicas were powder coated black then the red was painted on before being clear coated.

What to do with Scwinn American?

Fix or replace the bent fork then leave it alone and ride it.

Probably cheaply made, but it says Volkswagen on it.

Five dollars worth of transfers on a one hundred dollar bike.

Clear coat on bare aluminum frame

Was there any indication of the type of tubing before the frame was stripped? 6 series aluminum tubing will be fairly corrosion resistant. polish, Scotch-Brite, wax, etc will be fine. 7 series aluminum tubing will be much less resistant to corrosion and should be painted or powder coated.

    Basketcase stem/fork situation

The steering column appears to be bent at the fork crown. This gives good cause to replace the whole steering column.

Home made Truing stand.. yeah, another one ;-)

I like your work. Your stand is similar to the P&K Lie stand which is Uber cool but also sells for Uber bucks ($2000). Did the T-Square come from a power plane?

    Monark frame repair?

Glad the dropout issue is settled. CB and I ran out of pee. I am still claiming best distance while he scored best in accuracy. Now there is still the open issue of the chainstay repairs. Anybody have some ideas?

    Anyone else ride Longboards

Socal_Jack, there is a kid in Encinitas named Jack that films these guys, not you is it? And Beachside, you know I know what you ride.

    Monark frame repair?

I don't disagree with everything that CB is saying. However, as a Fabricator, Mechanical Engineer, and Engineering Manager by profession and a restorer as a hobbyist I will state that the physics of mechanical properties will not be denied. For any margin of safety the dropouts will need to be...

    Monark frame repair?

2000 series aluminum is alloyed for forming processes, casting, forging, bending, etc. It is not considered a weldable aluminum. Adding plates of 6 series may sound like the solution but the repair will only be as strong as the welds. Any fix to the dropouts does not address the rather dodgy...

    Anyone else ride Longboards

Stuck in the past? Boy you don't know the half of it. Life long Kneeboarder! (not the only one on this site either)

    Monark frame repair?

The welding is not big deal if you are good but there is more to it. When the welding is done you will have a completely annealed area (O condition). This area will have little of the original strength. I doubt anyone is taking the appropriate steps to have the frame solution heat treated after...

    Anyone else ride Longboards

I will never be old enough to have to ride a longboard. We do own two (8'0" & 9'0") as well as two longboard skateboards (Hobie Fiberflex).

New Crank 66 tooth and Hubs.

Yes the rings will fit. They are the 116mm BCD standard of most three pin cranks. The bolt hole diameters on mine are larger than the old ones, mine will fit a modern chainring bolt.

What is your Holy Grail of bicycles?

True ans ironic choice, but he did miss the cyclist. As far as Holy Grail bikes go it must be something nearly unobtainable like a T.E.Lawrence bike, not something that can be had for mere money.
