    “Amore a Prima Vista”

Loving that Benotto, Troy! I'm a sucker for old diamond frames, especially Italian!

    Double-Down

I like the way that tank looks now. I like it in that position. Your eye is drawn to it, and it looks like it was born there. The twin tubes would have barren look to them if something didn't fill up that space a little.

    Post-Apocalyptic Columbia

If I had the time, I would add new bronze and reshape all the joints. I'd like to make this the last Columbia I ever build. Their quality sucks sooooo bad! This is a 1947 klunker that I built over on Bike Forums Beach Cruisers section. Took me forever to get the quality put back into that frame...

    Post-Apocalyptic Columbia

Finally got a few minutes to work on this. Stripped all down. Naked as a purple jaybird. Oh! What have we here? A wee crack-a-lack-a? I'll throw some paint stripper on it and find out just how bad it is. Funny this should pop up. I'm running off today to get my o2 and acetylene tanks...

    Post-Apocalyptic Columbia

Consider this a "still alive and well" bump. Waiting for parts to come in. I've got a few. I've decided to go with Sturmey-Archer hubs, in particular the XL-FDD, which is a dynamo hub with a 90mm internal drum brake, and the RXL-RD5 five-speed rear with internal drum brake. After all, a...

    Loving this build already

    Post-Apocalyptic Columbia

Cool. I got some good ideas.

    Post-Apocalyptic Columbia

Question: This build is intended for the Vintage Bikes WBO, right? So how many modern components am I allowed? What's the bottom line? Frame and fork?

    Post-Apocalyptic Columbia

Here it is. 1946 Columbia. I'm thinking a post-apocalyptic theme. This bike is uglier'n a hat full of buttholes, but I think it's a blank canvas. I'll cook something up with it.

    1947 Columbia Build

I'm retired now, but I worked for a company that made hi-tech bearings. Unbelievable tolerances. You get used to the quest for utmost quality. Witnessing blatently-poor workmanship like this kind of catches me off guard a little. We gripe about the quality of Chinese products, but I'm starting...

Lol, yeah. Looks like they puked on it. :21:

Rims: Am I Looking for the Impossible?

Me like-um! Those fat franks have a nice stance on that rim, too.

    1947 Columbia Build

Hmmm... :39: A good theory, but since the sloppy braze was under the original paint, I doubt that there was any prior resto. I did just get the frame back from powder, but been too busy to do anything other than set it down and walk away. Today I am busy as a one-legged man in a butt kicking...

    1947 Columbia Build

Thanks! I started buying all my Park tools a little at a time. Every payday I would order a tool or a set of something like hex bits or torque wrenches. Eventually I got all I needed. The only thing I'd like to have now are the BB and head-tube facing-tools. Those are big bucks, and I probably...

    1947 Columbia Build

Checking frame alignment. Its a good thing I did. The rear was a full .250 to the port side! 10-15 minutes of tweaking brings it in compliance. :thumb: And every time you teak the rear triangles, you should ALWAYS recheck your drop-out alignments. As you can see, this was off as...

    1947 Columbia Build

Here's the filler that I'll be using. I've used it before and its great because it can be powder-coated. Here's the Lab Metal applied to the crappy joinery. I thinned it out, and applied it with an acid brush. MUCH easier than using a spatula or popsicle stick. More precise too. :thumb:

    1947 Columbia Build

Also, if you look at this pic, you can see that there is a seepage of some sort of oil. I thought it was just a shadow at first, but after running my finger inside the head tube, I did find a bunch of goo. A can of cheap brake cleaner should take care of this. I'll Framesaver this frame once it...

    1947 Columbia Build

Yes, yes there are. Sorry to be remiss. Its been a hellish Fall season here and there are a few too many irons in my fire and the coals are dying... Basically, I'm going to be using some Lab Metal to smooth and contour all of the shoddy workmanship. Its even more evident after the media blast...

    1947 Columbia Build

Sadness. At least with the kickstand and the fork removed, we can determine the original color. :thumb: I'm fiddling about with this right now because its 48F outside, and I don't feel like standing on a ladder with a paint brush in my hand right now. The hot cup of coffee I have here at...
