    Bikes! with Their Riders!

Maiden voyage during the 35km 'Ride for Your Life' fundraiser. Ran out of time before completing the refit for the 3" tires, I just noticed you can see the welding burn on my left forearm:

    Driftwood Cruisers II and III

Amazing what you can do with wood! It's such an unforgiving medium, BRAVO! :D I think a 60-80mm wide rear rim, 3" wide tire and a Nexus 7 speed hub would make for an unbeatable combination.

Here's how it fits with the rear tire:

The metal strip needs to angle forward to match the diameter of the tire. I'll make a cardboard template first, cut out, drill the holes and then weld it to the seat pan. I was planning to lace it to the pan but rivets would also work.

A bit of hammer and dolly work on the seat pan, followed by the drilling of numerous holes. Punched every 5th hole and zip tied the leather over 1" high density foam to shape it. After the leather sets I'll add the metal strip around the pan cut-out. Applying pressure to help the leather...

That's some wicked suspension travel Nick! Every wheel I've done with the ROCKX calculator has been spot on, wouldn't use anything else.

    tube roller or tube bender????

Both these bikes use 1.5" and 1" tubing. The 1" was rolled (coz my homemade roller has wooden dies) and the 1.5" tubes were done with a cheap bender using a series of many, many (many) small bends close together. If you have easy access to a good roller, it'll save you time (and bodywork) when...

    Cucumber

I get the feeling it's not going to look much like the drawing except for the centre frame section. I can't visualize where exactly you're going with this, so you know I'm going to tune in every day to follow the progress

    Air Ride Bike

I tried the garden kneeling pad idea for the seat base on my recycled recumbent. It works okay, but anytime your feet are so far out in front of your body a lot of weight/shearing force is placed on your sitting bones. I find my recumbent starts to become a little uncomfortable after about 30...

G-ratter: Your seat turned out great. I'm afraid a bit of padding is needed for my aging backside. I've been planning to contact some of my wheelchair suppliers at work as I hear you can get gel padding that comes by the sheet which can be trimmed to fit custom applications. If only I wasn't so...

    Air Ride Bike

Today I started out by making a 1/2" plywood seat pan with rounded edges. Using the wooden form, the seat pan was layed out on 16 gauge sheetmetal with an additional 1/2" all the way around for the lip where the leather cover will fasten. Vicegrips were used to crimp the edges of the pan...

    Left side drivetrain

Chainy: Have a look at how SicNic did just that on his air ride trike. Use a jackshaft with 2 sprockets running to a freewheel adapter on each axle, that way one side will freewheel around corners. 8)

    Air Ride Bike

I had considered the the skateboard deck idea too, I'm a bit stuck at this point. I had envisioned a metal seat pan with the outer edge rolled down for the leather cover to lace to. I would like it to be comfortable but still appear reasonably thin. With all the time and money invested, I don't...

    Air Ride Bike

Thanks guys! I've been planning a padded, tooled leather cover for this, but you could be correct about using a wood base instead of steel. I could simply attach a metal strip with holes drilled for lacing around the perimeter of the wooden base. MP63: It started out as a basic frame...

The plan is to lift the seat pan above the frame by 1" then have a lip aprox 1/2"-3/4" hang below the pan to lace the leather cover to. The seat will be mounted using 1/4" fasteners through the tubes into the seat pan. There will be a single mount up front running through the frame to anchor the...
