Mmmm..... The wife and I just bought a brand new trailer... a 08 that was left on the lot... We got it for $6000 off the the $17000 asking price... When I went to pick it up they had just hooked the water up.... and it was running all over the floor of the trailer.... leaks in the holding...

Is it cracking where you weld the cups or where your welding the head tube to other tube? Did you clean any chrome off the bearing cups? Wire welding the bearing cups is going to be problematic at best... If they are hardened you will get carbon localization which will make them...

Hey just so you all know... I can forge you a leaf spring any thickness or length you want (well within reason anyway) so dont let no spring be a hang up for not building some cool leaf sprung bike. I can even roll the ends for the hanger...

Remember its about final drive ratio... Not just the front sprocket. If you have a 9" Front and a 5" rear thats the same gear ratio as a 4.5" front and a 2.5" rear... Granted its easier to get a big front sprocket rolling because of increased torque but it still comes down to final drive.
