    Lets see your winter bike.

Last winter was actually my first winter commuting by bike. The windchills actually got down to -40F last year (you're in Minnesota, so I'm sure you went through something similar). The first day it got that bad I sucked it up and drove to work; there was too much talk about how deadly that...

    Lets see your winter bike.

Hmm, I had a vinyl seat last winter and it did just fine (and last winter was just about as cold as it gets). Then again, I was able to store my bike indoors at work at that job, and I stored my bike indoors at home. I get where you're coming from with your zero-maintenance policy on your...

Boy's Rocket bike (mfd. by Monark Silver King)

Good idea. I have a bottle of Simple Green and I haven't had much luck with it as a degreaser, so this might be a good use for it.

Boy's Rocket bike (mfd. by Monark Silver King)

:D Yeah, I'm not knowledgable on when banana seats were popular, but the BMX bars tipped me off that this bike wasn't completely original. Thanks for all of the info and a BIG thanks for that link ... I don't know that it ever had a tank, but it'll look sweet with or without one.

Boy's Rocket bike (mfd. by Monark Silver King)

Not a completely fresh find, but this is the first chance I've had to get some pictures up. Unfortunately I had to do it on a day where I didn't have any good lighting options, so please excuse the crappy picture quality. My wife's grandparents both passed in the last year, and as their stuff...

    Lets see your winter bike.

I built my winter wheels with Wheelsmith spokes, which I believe are stainless. Whatever they are they still look great. I'm trying out aluminum rims as well. Really excited to see what kind of shape the wheels are in by winter's end.

Man, that sounds rough. I'll keep that in mind; maybe biking through -20 won't be so rough next time :).

    Lets see your winter bike.

Yep, same here. I could not believe the fog last night. I live five minutes from the Mississippi river, so my wife & I walked along it last night and it was amazing; like nothing I've ever witnessed before. I was literally standing at the edge of the Mississippi and couldn't even see it right...

    Lets see your winter bike.

Yeah, I know other people who have made the same transition and went through the same thing. I just always figured they were weak too :D. Out of curiousity, do the high temperatures down there in the summer seem excessively high to you as a native northerner? (I know their temperatures get...

Personally I find his posts often times full of useful information that I may want to go back to and reference later. I wouldn't mind having to wait a few extra seconds loading a page as a trade-off :).

What area of Texas do you live in that you see that much snow? My sister-in-law lives near Houston and said that when they got snow last year the whole city basically shut down; they didn't know what to do.

That's encouraging to hear. I put in over 100 miles last week, many of which were in the hilliest (is that a word?) area of the city, and by the end of the week I was starting to power through some of those hills. I'm glad I can pull it off, but I'm just a bit worried about pushing myself that...

    Lets see your winter bike.

I could be wrong on the 25mph; I've never had a spedometer on my bikes, but I know that I average 10-15mph on flat land, and going down some of these big hills feels at least a good 5-10mph faster. The studs honestly barely make an impact on my speed. Yet they are extremely helpful when they...

    Lets see your winter bike.

This is one of the best feelings in the world. I even just get a rush out of passing by guys on derailleur-equiped bikes. I'm having a hard time climbing some of this city's hills on my Heavy Duti. It's the same gear ratio as all of my other bikes (48-16), and can't be too terribly much...

I've had just plain bad experiences with the Gorilla Glue family of products all around. But man, I appreciate your dedication to this project. Especially when you consider all the work you're putting into it, I'm starting to see how commercial studded tires might just be more practical :D.

Nashbar Schwinn frames $50 shipped TODAY ONLY

I've seen those too; after visiting Nashbar's clearance section over Black Friday they must've got their information stored in my web browser's cookies, because I was getting those ads everywhere on the internet. In any case, carefully inspecting alot of those ads revealed that many of those...

    Lets see your winter bike.

For me it's not even about my eyes tearing up because of the cold ... I can deal with that. It's how dry my eyes get thanks to winter riding. After putting in 30 miles in 16 degrees last week my eyes were SO insanely dry; it felt like I was going through a nasty bout of allergies or something...

    mountain bikes...the next big thing?

I hope the market on these doesn't get too hot, because the more thought I've been giving it, the more obsessed I'm getting with building up an 80's lugged MTB frame with a coaster brake. I just really love the look of those 80's lugged frames ... it's like someone took the geometry of the...

    Lets see your winter bike.

Your advice might just be worth taking, then. We have the same conditions here - rough, bumpy ice. I feel like I should purposefully go towards the ice, because I'm just wearing out my studs by taking them on the pavement, but if there's a choice between ice and pavement, I'm taking the...

Thoughts on disk-type coaster brake hubs

Deorman had mentioned oil; I know sometimes oil is used interchangably with grease, but sometimes you need to use more than one type of lubricant in a hub. I've always just used white lithium grease on hubs, and it's worked just fine. Is there any reason I'd need to use anything else in the...
