    SRAM Automatix 2 speed hub.

Thank you for the thoughts on this hub; I've been considering it for a long time. I've got a project I'd like to lace up a modern (ie, non-Bendix) 2-speed hub to, so it's basically gotta be either this or Sturmey Archer. I really want the ability to kick shift, but Sturmey Archer's kickbacks...

    Lets see your winter bike.

I can't believe you're still getting snow :D. I think it's been at least a month now in Wisconsin since we've seen any. I'll try to snap up a few pictures of my winter bike later this week so I can show what it looks like after a winter of commuting, as I'll be disassembling it for storage...

Looking for saddle recommendations for a touring cruiser

My wife and I completed our first century (112 miles, to be exact) last month, and did so on our old single speed cruisers (Schwinn Co-Ed for her, Concord New Yorker for me). It was a blast, and the only two things we'd do different is 1. bring pepper spray - dogs in the country are out for...

    Fender Braces?

I used these braces with Summit balloon tire fenders (26") and 26" balloon tire wheels and I had to cut off at least an inch to get the fenders anywhere close to the tire, and even then I've got a lot of room to spare. These are looooooooong fender stays.

    Bendix stick shifter question...

I'd like to know more about this as well; just got a Bendix 3 speed stick shifter for the same purpose. And I feel like an idiot for this, but it isn't obvious to me how to attach the cable either.

    New from Wisconzona

Weenies :P. I live (and commute) in Wisconsin year round. That being said, I am also nowhere near retirement age :D. Still, I don't see myself migrating south for the winter when I do reach that age. I love our four seasons :). Welcome to the site. I'm glad to hear you're passing on the...

    Best replacement pedals

My favorite current-production 1/2 pedals are probably these Sunlite pedals: http://www.amazon.com/Sunlite-Cruz-Sport-Pedals-Silver/dp/B00363LPEI They don't look very out of place on a vintage cruiser, and most imporatantly, they are overhaulable. I don't stand on my pedals very much, but I'm...

Why going to your LBS in January and February is the greatest idea in the history of the world!

Yeah, and the interesting thing is that we don't have that middle ground here (the bikesdirect-level fatbikes). Which is especially surprising since Sun makes a mid-price-level fat bike, and everybody here stocks through J&B Importers. But in any case, you can go to Wal-Mart and buy a Beast...

Why going to your LBS in January and February is the greatest idea in the history of the world!

And don't forget their biggest guns in the winter, ie (id est) fat bikes. The giddiness on their faces when they stock those up in the fall is almost scary, because they know they've got a few nice paychecks on the way.

    Lets see your winter bike.

It seems to me that our temperatures are always around 10 degrees warmer than yours are; we spent most of last week in the 20's and 30's. All it takes is a sunny day and at least 20 degrees, and whatever is on the road starts melting off. We've been enjoying clear streets for a while now. I...

Why going to your LBS in January and February is the greatest idea in the history of the world!

I have to imagine that this thread probably applies a bit more to us northerners :D. But yeah, I was talking to a guy at my LBS just before the start of winter and he said "I'll just be happy to make enough to pay my bills this winter". That said, this has been the nicest winter I can...

    Coaster brake questions

I *REALLY* wish there was some way to buy those hubs seperately. I've wanted a kickback hub for a minute now, and combine that with my love of my KT's single speed hubs, and you've got a hub I really want.

    Coaster brake questions

Quick question - were Falcon hubs made by the same guys making KT/Hi-Stop hubs? Or is it just an eerie resemblence? I've never had a Falcon hub, but I have a few odd parts from one thanks to a RRB member, and they sure look interchangable.

    10 Speed to Single Speed

    Yes sir :).

    Coaster brake questions

I'm sure you've already looked into this, but is are your cones adjusted properly? If the hub doesn't spin freely, an easier gear ratio just means you'll be going as slowly as before, only with a little less effort. I've heard of some hubs having a "breaking in" period, but I haven't observed...

    Coaster brake questions

In what sense does it not work? The hub doesn't spin freely, the brake doesn't stop, etc.? In most cases I'm just guessing the grease has hardened up from sitting idle for 25 years. I'm sure overhauling it with some fresh new grease would do wonders (then again, I overhaul the moving parts of...

    10 Speed to Single Speed

:D I'd always figured it was a reference to the 808 bass drum (frequently heard rattling trunks). But that's probably just me seeing what I want to see, because I can't live without my bikes or my bass :).

    Chain ? Help a Noob

I've encountered this at every bike shop I've been a regular customer at. I'm sure customer traffic/workload has something to do with it, but I've even experienced it in the middle of winter (which, for a bike shop up north, means struggling to make enough money just to stay open). The sad...

    Bike Books

Real world experience definetely trumps book learning any day of the week. I should also just point out that frequent Sheldon Brown contributor (I think he's the guy currently responsible for upkeeping of the site too?) John S Allen contributed to "Glenn's New Complete Bicyce Manual" and wrote...

    Lets see your winter bike.

I like how it's almost the opposite for me here up north. When we're talking -20, we're talking the sweatiest time of the year for me. I'm guessing it's because of the windproof outer layers I have on. I know there are people out there that strive to find material that is both breathable and...
