What In Tarnation Did I Just Bring Home? Some Kinda Rig I Wouldn't Understand Rescued From The Trash Man!

Funny part is, I rode my MTB across town to get a haircut this morning in order to test out my new Under Armour cycling app. Before doing so, I installed two new inner tubes. After the haircut, I took a different way home and got less than half way and developed a front flat. During my long...

Probably. Iron man decal is dated 2006. Would be cool to know who rode it, or if it really was used in the event.

What In Tarnation Did I Just Bring Home? Some Kinda Rig I Wouldn't Understand Rescued From The Trash Man!

All sorts of scary stuff I know little about! Aired up the tires, screwed in a pedal somebody had almost cross-threaded, tightened the wheels, raised the handle bars and removed the bull horns and arm rests, lowered the seat....and she's a runner! Gears all work using the shifters on the brake...

What did it for you? why did you get hooked on bikes and hooked on this web site?

I love to tinker and fix old stuff if I can do it successfully and on the cheap. I love old cars and guns. I'm REALLY bad with old cars beyond bolting on new parts, as evidenced by the '68 Chevelle that's been sitting gathering dust in my garage for 20+ years. I REALLY need to get rid of this...

What have you been riding lately?

If I may ask...what app are you using in the top photo with the Under Armor logo...and what does it do? Is it this? https://apps.apple.com/us/app/map-my-fitness-by-under-armour/id298903147 Looks like maybe this? https://apps.apple.com/us/app/map-my-ride-by-under-armour/id292223170 How do...

Some "artsy" shots of Pepe' from today on the new (and still under construction) trail in my little burg.

Suburban Assault Bicycle Starts To Take Shape!

After tooling 'round the neighborhood for a bit on this thing, I am considering different handlebars and grips, and a layback seatpost. What say you?

All done except for green anodized bear trap pedals on order. Not perfect, but I did what I wanted to do with it. I shall call it Pepe'. Feels good, man! :wink1:

Cold forging to close distance between rear dropouts?

Ok. So I lied. I couldn't wait until tomorrow. I adjusted the spacing to where the 26" SS coaster brake wheel slid right into the dropouts with just a hair of resistance, and it appears to be sitting perfectly straight and not cockeyed in the dropouts. Using the innermost gear of the bottom...

Cold forging to close distance between rear dropouts?

Field expedient rear triangle expander/crusher tool: 2'x3/8" threaded rod and a buncha nuts and fender washers. $33 Squeezed 125mm opening down to 88mm with no apparent ill side effects. I'll let it sit overnight locked in as you see it here, then release the tension and re-measure tomorrow...

    any shooters in the group??

I like gardening and wildflowers too. And kitties! I am an enigma. Wrapped in bacon. Maybe.

    any shooters in the group??

Some of my beloved long guns lost to Mrs. O'Leary's cow's wanton negligence. 😥 It's just as well, though. Somebody coulda got hurt. I mean...think of the children!

Cold forging to close distance between rear dropouts?

Thanks. I have plenty of junk 10 speed/mtb frames. I think I’ll experiment with one of them to see if I can install a 26” coaster brake wheel without major problems. Won’t hurt nuthin. Most that could happen is I ruin a nearly worthless 30 year old huffy frame!

Cold forging to close distance between rear dropouts?

    Roughly 20-25mm maybe?

    any shooters in the group??

Yes! I was in the usmc reserve. I’m expert with m16, and owned a plethora of long guns and handguns until I lost them all in a calamitous barn fire. Sad that. Now I piddle around with bicycles. It’s a much cheaper hobby.

Cold forging to close distance between rear dropouts?

I've seen folks use threaded rod, nuts, and washers to widen the distance between dropouts. Any issues with reversing the process and closing the distance between dropouts?

    Mismatched Wheel or Tire Sizes

Modified 1981 Sears Free Spirit 3-speed bike converted over to single speed with coaster brakes. 26x1.75 rear tire on a new wheelset, with 26x1 3/8 front on the original 3-speed bike's wheel with the original bike's fork. I wanted to use the fewest new parts possible with biggest tires possible...

The general fixed gear/SS conversion thread.

Are you lacing up those rear hubs yourself, or are you buying the entire wheel/hub assembly? I'm not at all concerned about weight savings. I'm looking for a cheap, simple solution to converting 10-speed/MTB frames into SS bikes.

It's a roller! Initial assembly. Much more to do, of course, but I'm very pleased with its appearance. It's turning out pretty much the way I envisioned it.
