The hinge is a pair of rod ends, and the base it bolts to is an SMC air cylinder end. The whole rig is around 32 lbs and the fur kid is 48 lbs. maybe I should do a build thread on how it was made . A few pictures of the build here ...

it may be a little late for this, but check out the Scandinavian sidebike design. good for up to 100lbs. I built my own version from the pictures they have on the web site, it works great
