New Guy with a (Don't Laugh) Walmart Bike

OK so... got back from doing the big loop around the community center. Each loop is a mile. Nice variety of dips and hill.... EXCEPT there is this sharp sidewalk turn going right into a fairly terrifying hill at the end of the loop feeding into the parking lot I start in. So there's ZERO...

New Guy with a (Don't Laugh) Walmart Bike

For giggles went to the website for my bike's manufacturer and went through all their replacement parts just to see how much it would cost. They sell everything but the frame as a purchaseable part. Total comes to $211 after tax. (shipping is free.) My bike cost $155 last year. This year...

    Derailleur Questions

Yea, was afraid of that. Is Tourney serviceable and or can better components be swapped onto it? Realistically what are my options and how dumb would it be to try kitbashing something together? Edit: Or would one of these work...

    Derailleur Questions

Question that most needs answering: Is that an integrated hanger? Assuming it is: What are my options for upgrading Tourney/Altus? Lastly: I have heard bits on the Altus can be replaced with higher quality parts. Is this realisticly doable, and is it worth it?

New Wheel Building Videos from Park Tool

Well, my first attempt at lacing failed. Ah well. should've done the easy thing and just compare replacement wheel to the wheel parts because 'well they literally are the same thing.' All this is being done with the idea that at some point I will get a different hub and either unlacing the...

MTB ride: I was poorly equipped for this :D

Dear Lord that's hilarious. Also kinda sad considering they're the ones that will try playing gatekeeper to anyone trying to get help from the local shop.

MTB ride: I was poorly equipped for this :D

At that level of money spent i am 90% sure theyr'e trying to justify the expense when someone ona literal klunker in every sense of the word is keeping up. I hold no ill will to folk who go for the high end. The high end advances and experiments with the craft and helps push things forward...

New Guy with a (Don't Laugh) Walmart Bike

Update: dismantled the old wheel. THere is a three inch bow in the rim that I will make an attempt at straghtening out but... wow that explains a fair lot. Spokes are filed away 'just in case' and the hub.... honestly feels like there is NO grease in it. Going ot watch a few videos on how to...

New Wheel Building Videos from Park Tool

Considering my recent wheel troubles? This is something I suddenly have interest in for when I find an appropriate rim and hub combination because I am very certain that improved hubs would improve my ride. Plus 'what if I want to go from freewheel to cassette?/

Have rims that can take a 1.75 tire. Can they take larger?

So what advantages are there to fatter tires?

Have rims that can take a 1.75 tire. Can they take larger?

I'm pretty sure I could safely force going up a tire size, but what about two sizes? Is there an advantage in doing this, assuming everything works? Looking to make the best use of limited funds and I have been told tires make the most difference.

    Two Speed Kickback

So... do I go with the blueband, sturmy, or a shimano? And should the front gear be swapped out? A situation like this is exactly why I put a front crank that lets me swap chainrings.

Update: Bought a replacement wheel from huffy because all the spokes opposite the bulges were taught to the point they would likely snap and the bulge side spokes were horrid loose. I could probably futz with it in time but i wanted m ybike rideable in the meantime and the manufacturer...
