Gonna build up this Huffy Impalla rat

I just dragged this Huffy Impalla out of my storage (meaning up in the woods behind the house) and I think I'll get it rolling. I like the patina, as is. I plan new tires, either some fatter wide white walls, maybe all whites, or maybe all red tires, can't decide. A new, probably chrome chain...

    bike storage suggestions

I gave away the woodstove and sink that have set unused for several years in my garage. I have in doing, freed up about a 12' x 12' area of corner floor space. I'm now trying to figure how to get the most use out of said space. I'm thinking some kind of rack or double deck storage. I have 8'...

starting again on my penny farthing build

Problem... I can find local sources for DOM tubing but nobody can bend it. Several can bend larger tubing than what I would be using, but they all tell me that the exact size dies must be used and no-one has the right size.

starting again on my penny farthing build

One build that I have looked at quite a bit , on the Wheelmen site, shows two spokes being welded together to make one long spoke. I believe I will try that.

starting again on my penny farthing build

the second half of my rim in the vise. I found that three passes thru the vise, moving a couple of inches after each "squeeze" did the trick. Now to weld the two halves together and make it round.

starting again on my penny farthing build

I now have the other half of my wheel formed. I realized that I have used 27" rims instead of 26's. I guess that means my wheel will be a little bigger than 48". No problem. After looking at a couple of the spoke calculator sites I am wondering if two spokes are going to be long enough to make...

starting again on my penny farthing build

If I can make the other half of my rim, like the first , the hub should not be a big problem. Then I will have to figure out the spoke length. I have looked at the spoke calculator websites. We'll see how that goes.

starting again on my penny farthing build

Success at last ! I tried again by putting a fresh rim in a vice and squeezing it and moving it a couple of inches at a time. After three passes thru the vice I have one rim spread into a more-or-less perfect half circle. Now I need a round object 48" in diameter to form the wheel around, after...

starting again on my penny farthing build

I am trying again to get started for real building a penny farthing. I believe that the front wheel will be the most challenging part, so I will try to build it first. I've read about a couple of builds where two 26" bicycle rims were split and spread to reform a bigger wheel. I tried that with...

    add on brakes

A rear brake was what I had in mind, in case the chain breaks.

    add on brakes

I think some brakes on my beach cruisers , besides the coaster brakes would be a good idea. I'm thinking either caliper brakes or even discs would be good. A couple of mine have black rims so I know what the rims will look like after a short time. I see discs on a lot of mtn bikes that I would...

83 Mongoose Expert Chrome Looptail BMX

I hope you can locate the correct rear wheel and tire. It would be nice to have it back in original condition.

    I like black bikes

I just realized that the last three bikes I've bought are black. I probably have 12-15 other black bikes in my "collection" as well. These three are a 1967 Sear three speed , a "the Realm" cruiser with a springer, and a 21 speed Ancheer (?). Actually ,I buy pretty much any color, except pink.

    stocking up on bearings

I found a chart on the the late Sheldon Brown's website that listed the common sizes an will order them.

    stocking up on bearings

I just ordered 1000 1/8" bearings for $10. I'm trying to figure out the sizes I might need for future projects and stock up on them too. I have cruisers, three speeds , ten speeds , mountain bikes and probably some that don't fit in these categories in my "collection" of bikes. The 1/8s go in...

Praying for the family and friends. I'm just a few miles NW of Statesville.

    my first realm

It rides nice. Love springer fronts. I might change to a 1 or 2 tooth bigger gear in the rear though. The rims both have stickers with 2008 on them.

    my first realm

Until a few days ago, when one appeared on the local craigslist, I had never heard of a Realm bike. Now I have this one... The seller told me that it was bought new in California and brought to western NC. It has a lot of scratches and scuffs in the paint, so I might repaint it. I found some...

    a riveting question

I really want to be able to make the head of the rivets look like they did from the factory. Most of the time I have no help, so I need a method that one person can do. I'm thinking that I could do the c-clamp . One side of the clamp needs a slightly concave surface to fit the head of the rivet...

    a riveting question

Several of my bikes either need the fender stays replaced or restored. I have found the rivets for sale on the 'net and found a how-to video about restoring a 1955 Tonka truck using similar rivets. I believe I can make a tool by modifying a c-clamp. Anybody been there and done that? Thanks.
